TW-GLEECLUB REACTION ROUND-UP
Episode #6: The Middle Men
Official Reaction Post Commenting Policy:
1. Squee, discussion, and criticism are all welcome in
tw_gleeclub reaction posts. Please still keep the comm rules in mind when commenting, however:
- "JB's acting in that scene was reaching near-'my poor friend' levels!", "So any idea when Esther actually becomes interesting?", "Really, a joke about chips vs. crisps, RTD?", "Did anyone else feel like this episode moved r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w?" = A-OK
- "Counting down until this piece of shit gets cancelled!" = not appropriate for Gleeclub. Take it elsewhere.
2. Corollary: disagreements are allowed, wank is not. Hopefully we've all been in fandom long enough to know the difference. Generally, if it involves sarcasm, name-calling, grudges, passive-aggressive petnames/smileys, or personal insults, you've crossed into wank territory. Wanky threads will be frozen by the mods, at which point you are free to take the disagreement elsewhere, if you'd like to continue it. If you see wank or trollbaiting threads, please do not jump in and contribute. Instead, PM the mods:
heddychaa,
thepyromanical1, and
_lullabelle_ and we will deal with it. Getting accidentally involved in wank (you just tripped and fell right into it, honest!), will not necessarily get you in trouble. Doing it repeatedly, especially as an instigator, will get you banned.
3. Don't harsh other people's squee. If you really must complain about Rex Matheson's characterization (NOT THAT YOU WOULD, RIGHT!?), don't do it directly in response to a thread of gifs celebrating his status as a BAMF. Reply to the post and start your own thread, instead.
4. ALL REACTION POSTS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE EPISODE BEING DISCUSSED IN THE COMMENTS. Please do not use reaction posts to post spoilers before they air. (This is especially important for people who have already seen the ep joining the BBC reaction post! Don't talk about things that happened in the last five minutes of the ep when BBC viewers are still on the opening credits.) Similarly, if you've found a leaked spoiler about episode 4.08, don't post it in an episode 4.04 reaction post. Make a separate (cut) post to discuss upcoming/unaired spoilers. The spoiler policy, for your reference, is
here, and will remain in effect for all episodes even after the series has finished airing. When in doubt, use a cut.

your mods ♥
Tonight I watched with my folks, rather than my sister and OH MY GOD! This episode is probably what I've been waiting for, though I did have a few issues...
• Ernie Hudson!!!
• So, what's behind the big ol curtain in Shanghai?
• Whatever it is, it makes people jump off buildings?
• Every time I see white smoke on the show now, I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.
• I love that Rex FINALLY admits to working for Torchwood… it's only taken him three episodes.
• Feeling a bit sorry for Rex here, he's still trying to do his job, and yet, he's still visibly upset/disturbed by what he's witnessed.
• I love this Coltrane soldier guy. I love how he is freaking the fuck out and Maloney is all "Badminton."
• Oh, Esther, please don't get on this guy's bad side… he practically oozes sleazoid boss.
• This brings me to a point that is slightly touched upon later in the episode: Why the fuck is Esther using her REAL NAME? Isn't she still wanted by the CIA? Aren't the bad guys still after her and Rex (and Jack and Gwen)?
• Gwen confronting the doctor in Cowbridge made my head spin. I love that someone - anyone - was finally standing up to an ACTUAL doctor in regards to what is going on and calling a spade a spade.
• "Oh, and one more thing: Don't call yourself a doctor, not anymore. You should be ashamed."
• I am so, so glad we got to see Rhys' reaction to being an unwilling participant in all of this.
• I love that Gwen is thinking on her feet and still wanting to save her dad.
• Oh Gwen and Rhys, I love you both.
• Soon as I saw that text message from an unknown number, I knew it was Jack.
• Seriously though, if I had that smile aimed at me in a bar, I don't care what kinda stalker-y bullshit came out of his mouth, I'd definitely be all…
• Bitchy Jack! Love it! It was almost like Ianto had rubbed off on him (HAHAHA) a little bit.
• Once again, we see The Coat as a pick-up point for Jack. Sorry guys, but… it's starting to get really stale.
• Oh Jack, your flirting with everything makes me happy. I've missed this.
• Haha, poor Elizabeth. However, the fact that she went to call for back up makes me wonder if she knew about Stuart's adulterous ways.
• Is Ernie a Good Witch or a Bad Witch?
• The plot thickens! Even the Middle Man on the PhiCorp side is trying to figure out what is going on.
• I love that we're seeing the alternate side to the coin: the people who don't want to live forever.
• What is The Blessing?
• I love that Rex tries his best to go undercover. Love that the guy was "Exactly" his size.
• Serious face-palming going on when Rex gets caught by what seems like an entire unit.
• I love the Soldier (Coltrane) saying that Rex has been caught with a camera, but no one (Not even Maloney) bothers to destroy the camera or the footage.
• Rex is way too trusting a person, especially in light of all that happened to Vera.
• Maloney is even more creepy when he cries.
• Love Esther not backing down and not giving a crap what the other Admin staff try and tell her.
• The whole video clip then the thing with the pen made me want to be ill. Pretty sure I'm gonna have slap marks where I was slapping my hands over my eyes.
• I did genuinely feel for Rex, who will help patch him up?
• I kept screaming for Esther to hurry her arse up and rescue Rex (because that would be awesome and end the 'Useless Esther' stuff), but I'm pretty sure if she was wearing sensible shoes, she'd have gotten there way faster.
• Thumb in the eyeball - EWWWWWWWW.
• I love this whole exchange between Kick-Arse Esther and Maloney. Here is a guy who, we've seen so far be very sleazy towards women - he keeps me in mind that, were I to work with him, I'd purposefully avoid the office Christmas party - and here is this tiny blonde woman, terrified for her life, terrified for her friend and colleague and she grabs on and doesn't stop fighting.
• I love Rex trying to get her to keep focusing. He's not dead, just category 1.
• I love that she pulls herself together enough to go back for the keys to Rex's chains.
• Oh Rhys! Using and abusing Jack's reputation from prior seasons to slice your way through red tape. I love you, please don't change.
• The cleaner watching Gwen - Spy or Sympathiser?
• Love Gwen muttering threats to Rhys to herself, and then I love that she takes matters into her own hands where her dad is concerned and we finally see.. Cleaner = Sympathiser. Obviously not everyone agrees with what is going on. THANK GOD.
• I love that Gwen sends Rhys ahead with her dad, and I love Rhys being all BAMF Lorry driver through the gates! Huzzah! Rhys and Geraint are on the road to safety!!!
• Woohoo! The return of the contact lenses.
• And Jack is busy back at the office. Love it.
• I love Biker!Gwen, I love her message, I love that she is BLOWING SHIT UP.
• I love the following scene between Esther and Rex, she's so scared and he's trying so hard to hold himself together and then he hugs her. And finally we see Esther using her real name addressed as having possible consequences, but no reason as to WHY she was using it. We know that Torchwood can make Dodgy IDs, so why not make one for Esther?
• I love that their efforts haven't really made a difference.
• Gwen's back in LA, and Rhys isn't answering his mobile. I was kinda hoping he was waiting at the airport for her.
• Mysterious Phone Call is Mysterious.
• And now, we've established that they have Momma-Cooper, Rhys and Anwen… Where is Geraint?
• Why do they want Jack?
• Why do the baddies have the contact lens technology?
• Loved this episode, but has RTD hit the ceiling? If a season five comes about, where does he go from here?
Sorry for the point-form tonight, am away from home, and haven't even had a chance to write my full reaction post yet. But I did enjoy the episode a lot, and was flitting between yelling, squee-ing, and cringing the entire time. Full reaction post will go up on my journals tomorrow once I'm home.
In the interim though, I'd love to hear everyone's theories on what is Behind the Red Curtain! - I'm thinking it's crazy circus folk... LoL.
