There's a flash of blue light and shock of pain that crawls over his nerves and steals his breath before it stops his heart.

He wakes up gasping, choking and gagging on life.

When he hears the TARDIS he runs but he's too slow and too late. He arrives in time to see the TARDIS fade from reality taking his Doctor, his answers and his hope with it.

He's on a graveyard in orbit around a dead world. He's the only living thing in the solar system and he can't die. Jack has all the power.

He doesn't want it.

Jack cannibalizes the Doctor's never used delta-wave and the station's tech to get off Station Five. He aims for Rose's time because the Doctor will head there and Cardiff because he needs a star to steer by.

He lands almost directly on top of the rift. According to his wrist-comp he's only about a century and a half early.

Between leaving the station and crashing back to earth he dies three times. The landing kills Jack's equipment and kills Jack again.

He wakes up alone in the rain. He still has it, then.

He's cold and he wants his Doctor.

19th century earth isn't high tech. Jack understands the technology of time travel but without working equipment that doesn't help. What does help is his knowledge of history, his experience with time travel and his wrist-comp.

It doesn't take him long (in the scheme of things) to use his brain and association with the Doctor to con his way into Torchwood.

He stays at Cardiff. He's doesn't know if the Doctor or alien tech he can use will show up first. He doesn't really care.

He loses count of how many times he dies and comes back while he's waiting.

Jack's the boss. Staff comes and goes but he's the guy in charge.

People give him power. Power of decision, power of responsibility, people on their knees in front of him and baring their throat to him. They look to him for answers when he doesn't have any of his own.

He takes it because it's the right thing, because he can and because no one else will. He doesn't want it and he's never looked for it. All he's chasing is the truth and all he wants are answers.

Hitting his knees and screaming before Abaddon's a relief.

Jack's tired.

Jack isn't surprised when he steps on board the TARDIS and sees the Doctor - Torchwood prepared him well.

The Doctor's not so lucky.

As soon as the door shuts and they're safely on their way Jack grabs the Doctor by his coat and slams him into a wall. The Doctor squeaks when Jack's mouth covers his, bruising and biting.

With both hands holding the Doctor to the wall there's nothing he can do to stop the hand that pushes past his temple and fists in his hair, hard enough to sting.

Jack doesn't want to stop it.

He wants rest.
