He knows Jack has feelings for him and he knows he returns those feelings, but neither of them can voice what they feel. At the first sound of “love,” Jack tenses and never meets his eye. He knows they are what normal people call a couple, but when he tests the waters about their status, Jack dismisses the idea with a quip about the twenty-first century’s use of labels. It’s difficult on the best of days that Jack can’t admit what they both know.
But the moment something is observed, it ceases to be as it was when left alone.
