What makes a man a hero? Hegel and Carlyle pondered this, as did Aristotle. Some literary names come to mind: Beowulf, Odysseus, Hamlet, Holmes. Others think professions: policemen, firemen, soldiers. If one asked the hero, and if by chance, that hero was the Doctor, he would answer many things. On a cold night in front of a funeral pyre, he would say this:
A hero is not a hero until there’s a villain, and when that adversary is gone, the man may or may not continue doing heroic things, but his heart will no longer be thrilled by the fight.
