Not Exactly to Plan

The Doctor wasn’t in the habit of waking up with a headache, nor was he used to finding himself with a pink feather boa wrapped around him in the morning. Come to think of it, it was strange for him to wake up at all, having convinced himself that he didn’t need to sleep (which he didn’t, at least, compared to Rose who liked a good ten hours most days.) So imagine his surprise when he found himself with all three (a headache, a boa, and an awakening) while simultaneous getting laughed at by Rose Tyler from the foot of the bed and smiled at by Captain Jack Harkness snuggled up on his side. The Doctor wasn’t as amused. “Explain,” he said, glaring at Jack.

“Why do you sound like you’re blaming me?”

“Because I am blaming you,” the Doctor slipped the boa off his neck, “Especially for that.”

Jack laughed. “Okay, that one was mine, but you can’t blame me for that! The opportunity presented itself and I’m an ‘act first, think later’ kind of guy.”

Rose giggled.

“And just how did it present itself, Captain?”

“Well,” Jack placed a hand on the Doctor’s shoulder, but snatched it back when the Doctor slapped it away. “There was this party in the Crab Nebula and I asked really nicely and I’d been good all week, you said, so you said we could go.”

The Doctor didn’t believe him.

Jack sighed. “Okay, so Rose asked after I told her about it.”

The Doctor nodded, slipping out from underneath the covers (much to Jack’s disappointment.)

“But you let me buy you a drink!” Jack continued, sprawling out over the newly available space. Rose coughed. “Okay, so two drinks.” Rose coughed again, and the Doctor raised an eyebrow. “Three?” Jack looked at Rose, who shook her head. “Seven,” Jack mumbled, looking down at his chest. “But you liked them.”

The Doctor blinked. “Seven?”

“Yup.” Rose motioned to Jack, “He thought you might be seven times as nice to him if he bought you all that. He might’ve been looking for a bit more, too, seein' as how he kept referring to you as his 'date'” she aimed a pointed eyebrow at the now-sheepish Captain. “But I would’ve defended your honor, Doctor, I promise. I had eyes on his hands at all times.”

“And how exactly did seven drinks make me pass out?”

Rose looked at Jack, who looked down at the bed. The Doctor crossed his arms. “If I wanted, I could remember what happened. Now, would you like to tell me the truth, or would you like me to figure it out on my own?”

“Jack can’t dance!” Rose shouted.

“I can, too!” he protested. “Just . . . not after seven drinks of my own with an arm full of Time Lord and a bundle of nerves trying not to screw anything up.”

The Doctor raised an eyebrow and patiently tapped one foot on the floor.

“You were bein’ nice, sayin’ how you owed Jack a dance," Rose elaborated, "So you went off, even tolerating the boa an' all, but you got your legs tangled, and next thing I know, you’re both flailin' about and falling down some inconveniently located stairs. You bumped your head when you broke Jack’s fall.”

Managing to follow Rose's rapid speech, the Doctor brought a hand up to his head. There was a bump. It sounded like something silly enough to happen to him. “Explains the headache.”

“I’m really -” The Doctor raised a hand and Jack fell silent.

“Go make me a cup of tea, and I’ll consider letting you have a second chance.”

Jack beamed and hurried out of bed. He ran out of the room, but popped his head in a second later. “Just to be clear, when you say ‘a second chance’ do you mean to -”

“Get back in my good graces?” The Doctor smirked. “Why yes, Captain, I did mean that.”

"Got it," Jack nodded and disappeared once more.

"I'll go help him," Rose left after him.

"He'll need it," the Doctor said, but smiled as he did so.
