Jack was beside him in a second.

The Doctor didn’t even comment on it.

Two simple sentences say so much about their relationship, whether good, bad or both. The Doctor trusts Jack, views him as expendable, both, or just knows he can take care of himself. Jack's stubborn, or just wants to help in whatever way he can, or views himself as expendable. Interesting what you can gather from two lines.

“What happens when it reaches zero?”

“Nothing.” The Doctor shrugged. “Penalonian countdowns have the annoying habit of ending at four. Don’t ask me why. Probably just wanted to be special.”

I could just hear Tennant saying that. Perfect.

“That’s it?” Sarah Jane asked.

“I’d expected something more dramatic,” Jack added. The Doctor rolled his eyes.

“I can turn it on again if you want dramatic,” he offered, causing Martha to quickly say:

“I like it this way.”

“Me too,” Mickey agreed.*G* Adorable exchange ( ... )

Thanks a lot!

I feel bad for Martha, but I don't really see how the Doctor could have treated her any differet - except for not talking about Rose all the time.
I still don't think he really got how she felt about him until the end. Possibly because he didn't want to see it.

Very intense and creepy story. It's true what they say about horror movies: it's scarier when you don't see the monster.

You know, for all the subtlety's of this story, it made me want to cry. I'm reminded again of how brilliant you are.

I'm going to assume the Doctor dies in the future during that adventure with Jack. Just...wow. How Jack must feel. I can't imagine having to look at your friend knowing he's on borrowed time.

“That’s it?” Sarah Jane asked.

“I’d expected something more dramatic,” Jack added. The Doctor rolled his eyes.

*snickers* We usually expect something dramatic from the Doctor. ;)

You had some great lines in this story and it was perfect for the challenge. They know who to call in an emergency. It was the powerful undertones of the story that really made it such a moving ficlet.

Thank you for sharing!

sad and lovely. for some reason, sarah jane figuring out what must have happened was the most moving part, along with ten's blithe ignorance as he asks, "I didn't regenerate, did I?"
