“All right, stitch him up.”
“Yes, Doctor Harper.”
Owen tossed his used gloves into the bin and ripped off his mask.
“Good work, Doctor,” an intern said.
Owen only nodded quickly in reply. Just another day, another surgery, another life saved. He did his job, diagnosed, and filled out the paperwork but inside there was a space where satisfaction used to rest.
“Papers, sir,” a nurse said, handing him a stack.
In his office Owen put the papers to the side and pulled an X-ray out of his desk drawer, holding it up to the light.
“Katie…” he said softly.
