Against All Odds
Jaejoong knew that for the past three days he had been in and out of awareness; he knew it, but to him it felt that he was constantly drifting in and out of some strange dream. Day and night passed as one to him. Even just opening his eyes seemed a trial; his eyelids felt so heavy. And if he did open his eyes, the world around him seemed dark.
Everything in him ached. He wondered oftentimes if he tried to lift his arm, if his arm might break it felt so brittle. He never bothered to turn around in the bed, just lay on his back. Even breathing felt terrible. To him, his chest was supporting a tremendous weight that he could hardly lift. Just to take a breath painful.
And yet, what hurt more than anything, was the thought of her. Elise. The thought that, he wanted to save her; she didn’t know what was really going on inside of her family. He had found out and was going to get her away from them. Take her far away and protect her then, not as a bodyguard, but as a man protects his beloved.
But like a love-sick fool-he hated Yunho for saying it, hated him even more because, in a way, it was true-Jaejoong had failed. His eyes weren’t open to the fact that while he learned what the “family business” was, the family had learned of his knowledge as well. But he was so infatuated with being a hero, with being the one to rescue her from an imposing danger, Jaejoong had not been aware of the danger that he, himself, entered.
So, they caught him. Thrashed him. Beat him senseless. Left him lying in bed, like an invalid. Like a fool. Jaejoong felt his temples begin to throb again. He felt a pressure rising up in his head. What a fool he was. What a fool.
But he would not remain like this. He was on the mend, anyway. He would get her back. Somehow, he would find Elise and take her with him. No obstacle standing in his way. No odds blocking his path. A thousand times Jaejoong swore to himself that he would save her, even if it meant his life. His own life was such a small thing next to her; if it was forfeit, than it was forfeit. And once he saved her, once he could look in her eyes again, he would take her in his arms-just like that one night.
That evening was etched in his mind, engraved on his heart. It was after dinner, Jaejoong usually stayed for dinner at the house to truly make it look as if he and Elise were siblings, and she asked him to go for a walk in the gardens. The mansion she called home had extensive gardens well worth taking a walk in. However, that particular evening the sky threatened rain. Jaejoong advised her against it. She pleaded. Her eyes, so gentle, so soft, like the eyes of a newly born doe, took away any argument Jaejoong had within him. They went for the walk.
Outside, the skies were heavily grey and a strong wind was growing. Elise walked a few steps ahead of him. He watched her, fascinated. A certain grace clung to Elise, an un-named joy walked in her wake. She was out of this world. Every step she took, every gesture she made, these had not been seen by the likes of mortal eyes before. Abstractly, Jae wondered if God had just taken off her wings so she could play on the earth.
She turned to look at him, a beaming smile upon her sweet mouth. Jaejoong felt the wind go out of him. With the skip of a child, she came towards him, took his hand and pulled him along next to her. Her touch was more than he could stand. No weapon was as powerful as the feel of her hand in his.
Suddenly, a peal of thunder broke forth from the sky, heralding the storm. Elise jumped in fright, throwing her arms around Jaejoong. He laughed at her reaction, so innocent, so like a little girl. And he thought, because he saw her smile too that in a moment, she would straighten up and continue the walk. But she didn’t. She stayed in his arms. She lay her head on his chest. Jaejoong felt dizzy. He felt like his head might explode. The feel of her small frame, the touch of her frail warm body against his own, Jaejoong could hardly breathe. And without thinking, because he couldn’t stand it anymore, because he felt as if he should faint, Jaejoong wrapped his arms around Elise. He pulled her closer to him. At that moment, it didn’t seem as if he could be close enough to her. But she was so delicate, he was afraid of crushing the flower he held.
And they stayed like that. The wind howled, lightening flashed, the rain began. But the only thing Jaejoong heard was the sound of Elise’s voice, “Oh, Jae. I think I love you.”
And he, bending his head towards her, leaning close so that his mouth brushed her cheek, wanted to say so much. But words failed him. And all he managed to utter was a groan.
Laying as he was now, unable to move, the thought of that night was almost painful.
“What a fool I am,” he thought, and slipped out of his mind again.
