Back to work deep freeze

Ohmygod. What the heck happened! The weather report on the radio this morning as i dragged myself out of sleep says it's -13 with a wind chill of -25. WTF????!!!! You'd think the weather gods would be a bit kinder for the first day back to work after Christmas wouldn't you? No. They're adding insult to injury. Cripes.

Rug up, wrap up, and get a very large and very hot tea when I get to work.

My work laptop still isn't completely set up properly, I had it home over the holidays as i was on call one day and though i can connect to work it still won't access the internet. Must get that checked. It's probably a setting somewhere. One other thing I have to get sorted on it, as well and I think my coworker can help me there. I won't be switching over to it completely as there are still two programs on my XP machine that i need to access, one of which will be going away sooner and the other i need for awhile longer.

2013. You know...I could actually take my retirement pension from work on December 1 this year. That's years of service plus age = 80 but the pension is only 50% of the average of my best three years' salary and that's not really enough, not with the traveling I do and not with the cost of living these days, so I doubt very much I'll take it and run. Plus, it would never increase. They say it could be indexed for cost of living but it rarely is. I can take Canada Pension as early as 60 which would also bring my work pension to 60% which is what most people take. I suppose that's probably what i'll do though if things get too stressful before then, at least I know i can go. We call it the P1 plan. "Piss me off... just once!"

I guess that also means i've hit 25 years service this year because i started in July 1988 so it will mean another long term service award by the end of the year. Last time, at 20 years, they gave out digital clocks set into a desk pen holder. The clock didn't last but the holder still performs perfectly! I think the 25 year gift that year was a nice framed photo of a scene from HRM somewhere. I forget where. It's hard to believe i've been here this long, really. There's been a lot of changes, not all for the better but that's the way it goes. And in other respects, the more things change, the more they stay the same. I've got a little sign on my wall that says "The floggings will continue until morale improves" and i've seen no reason to take it down yet.
