“So are we seriously not supposed to know about those two?” Castle asked as he sat back down in his chair next to Beckett’s desk, where she was typing on her computer.
“Know what about which two?” she asked, exasperatingly rubbing a hand over her face before she met his eyes.
Castle gave a nod of his head in the direction of Ryan and Esposito, who were huddled closely, looking over some papers on the other side of the room.
Beckett smirked somewhat coyly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, come on! You’ve never noticed how comfortable they are around each other? You’ve never noticed those little looks they give each other?”
“Nope,” Beckett kept her head down, fingers gliding over the keys.
“You can’t tell me you didn’t notice Ryan wearing one of Esposito’s shirts last week.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about Castle,” she repeated. “Just drop it, OK?”
She still hadn’t looked up from the screen. Castle knew she was lying; time to bait her.
“Wow. I must be a better detective than you are then,” he shrugged, leaning back in his chair.
Beckett’s fingers faltered on the keyboard, paused for a moment, and hit the backspace button before she continued.
“Maybe I’ll just go confront them about it then. Tell them I know what’s going on and make them admit it.” He stood up abruptly.
“Sit down, Castle.” He sat back down immediately.
“Just admit you noticed it. I know you did. Why haven’t they told us?” He sounded a little hurt. Beckett leaned in closer to him.
“For someone who’s apparently a “better detective than I am”, you sure are dense,” and she whacked him lightly upside the head. “Of course I noticed. But, being detectives, there are a lot of things we’re able to notice about each others’ personal lives. It’s impolite to ask about things we haven’t been told or aren’t supposed to know.”
“Like detective etiquette?”
Yes,” she sighed. “They’ll tell us when they’re ready to. Or they won’t. The force doesn’t exactly encourage relationships between partners. They’d probably be re-assigned..,” she trailed off with a sad glance at her two best detectives.
Castle felt like an idiot. He may have put all the pieces together in the right order, but he’d failed to see the big picture. He watched Beckett smile sadly.
“I’ll keep my mouth shut from now on,” he told her. She chuckled, amused.
“Don’t go making promises you’ll never be able to keep Castle,” she smirked. “But about this particular matter, yes you will keep your mouth shut.”
She went back to her typing and as Castle opened his mouth to say something, she added “Or I’ll shoot you. And that’s a promise I’m able to keep.”
