Last Wednesday, Teri and I attended a fund-raiser for the Jewish United Fund. It was a cocktail and dinner event where Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner, co-authors of the book Freakonomics, were guest speakers.
It was held at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. Dinner was poor, I didn't get to drink enough, and yet I gave that customary donation to the already extremely wealthy JUF. I just hope they don't use my portion to buy more missiles.
When the celebrated speakers took the stage, I could feel a sense of anticipation fill the room. When they got off the stage 30 minutes later, I couldn't help but feel disappointed. Neither of the two speakers were that great. Stephen Dubner was much better than Steven Levitt, more entertaining, more witty, and with a much better stage presence. Steven Levitt spoke as if he were giving a lecture to an incoming freshman class of undergraduates, and spent half of his stage time talking up a different author's research. But Levitt is, after all, a professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. And with us all being creatures of habit, after a decade of giving lectures, perhaps we can expect no more from him.
For keepsake's, I did purchase a copy of the book and asked both authors to autograph it. Maybe one day I can auction it off and get back the money I donated this night.
