The day you first meet him is cold and rainy, just like too many days on the last week. Having nothing better to do, you go to the practise room a little early. Of course you didn’t think anyone would be there, so it gets you a little off guard to realize someone is actually practising already. Soon enough you find yourself staring at the lonely figure in front of the mirror.
He has his headphones on and eyes half shut, and he’s completely lost in his own world. He’s dancing, his slender body moving slightly in the beat of the music you cannot hear. The only rhythm is coming from the raindrops hitting the window, and you listen to him singing some unfamiliar Chinese song that you will probably never understand. His voice is quiet and weak, far from that of a professional singer, but for you, it couldn’t be more perfect. Even though you can’t clearly see his face, you can still hear all the feelings in his voice. Sadness, longing, hope and happiness. And you can only stare.
He sees you through the mirror, eventually. The singing stops at once, and for a short second, you could swear you see a look of embarrassment in his dark eyes. Then he turns around, smiling, and you can feel your world has stopped moving for a while.
‘I’m sorry’, he says, ‘I totally forgot about the time.’
Still confused, you can only nod silently, and before you realize he’s already leaving. You find yourself standing alone in the empty room with only the beat of the rain and the memory of his singing left. It doesn’t take long before the others arrive and it gets all noisy again, but you seem to have forgotten how to use your own voice. And so the practise goes on like in a dream.
The next day, you sleep later than usual and when you arrive at the practise room, he’s nowhere.
It’s strange how just in a second life can change so completely. You also get to notice that the day you, Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and Shindong are coming home from a radio programme. It’s dark and sleepy, the street lights pass by one after another, and you don’t really pay attention to the swaying of the car. Only when you see the bright lights of another car from the corner of your eyes, you realize something’s not right.
And in a blink of an eye, the driver loses control of the car and suddenly everything is glass and blood. You see the shock on Eunhyuk’s face, hear Leeteuk screaming in pain, and then something hits hard on your left side. That’s when the darkness takes over.
You don’t really know what’s happening or when or where you are. Maybe, you think quietly, you’re coming to an end. Every memory seems to pop up from the depths of your mind, everything from your first birthday parties to learning to play guitar, and just as soon as you get a hold of them, they disappear again. Maybe it’s true what people say, that when you die, your life flashes before your eyes like a movie. Because that’s exactly what’s happening to you now.
And maybe, when there’s almost nothing to remember anymore, you think it’s okay. That’s before you remember the dark eyes, warm smile and the singing voice that seemed to make the whole world turn upside-down. That’s when you remember him, the man you’ve only seen once and whose name you don’t even know - maybe never will. And that’s when you decide you’ll have to hold on.
You don’t know how long it has been, but in the end, you feel your body slowly waking up. Your lungs are like on fire and it feels impossible to even think about speaking, but the pain everywhere reminds you clearly about the fact that you are alive. Even your memories are back, all of them: and yet, something still seems to be missing. You just can’t bring yourself to realize what.
And finally, when you open your eyes, you can see Sungmin and Eunhyuk and Siwon around your bed, eyes red from crying.
They are more than relieved to see you awake. Sungmin starts crying again, telling you that you’ve been unconscious for two days, that no one knew if you were going to survive or not and how worried all the others were. They tell you how the accident happened, that Leeteuk is still on surgery because of all the glass shards on his skin, and that two of their managers are dead.
You do your best to listen, but soon enough, you can feel yourself slowly drifting off into the darkness again.
The months you spend in the hospital feel like years, and it seems to take forever before you finally have recovered enough to leave. All the others are already practising new songs and new dances, and you wish more than anything that you could also be allowed to join them. But no, your body is still too weak, and everything you can do is watching them from afar, wondering if things will ever be the same.
And although you spend your long nights thinking about everything that has happened, you still can’t understand why it feels so empty inside, and the missing memory keeps out of reach.
One day, you go to the practise room by yourself after everyone else has left. You watch your reflection in the mirror, pale skin and fragile body and lips that seem to have forgotten how to smile. It still hurts to sing, and your legs are not strong enough to carry you if you dance. It feels so frustrating that you almost want to cry and hit the mirror into a thousand pieces so you wouldn’t need to see the tired image of yourself anymore.
You hear the door opening slowly, and through the mirror you can see someone standing in the doorway, smiling widely. You don’t remember seeing him before, but something about his presence feels so familiar it makes you a little uncomfortable.
‘Hi’, the stranger says, and you force yourself to turn and face him. ‘Can I come in?’
‘Sure’, you find yourself answering, ‘I won’t be using this room anyway.’
He nods, still smiling, and comes inside. You turn your eyes away from him and go to get your stuff from the corner of the room. He glances at you, silently asking if it’s okay that he starts practising, but you avoid looking at him. You don’t want to see the happiness appear in his eyes when he starts, because right now, everything feels just so damn unfair that you can’t take it anymore.
You are just about to open the door and walk away when you hear him. The hand reaching for the doorknob freezes, and you turn around quickly, as if wanting to confirm that what you hear is for real. The melody silently sinks into your memory, and suddenly, you feel the world becoming just a little bit brighter.
This time, there’s no silent beat of the rain to support his singing, and this time it’s you who is leaving. He’s not dancing yet, but his eyes are half shut like before, and all the mixed-up feelings can still be heard in his voice. He’s improved a lot, you notice yourself thinking, and that’s when you realize what has been missing for all these months.
It feels like returning home after a long, long journey.
‘Hey, uh’, you start, and he stops singing, noticing you are still in the room. This time, there’s no sign of embarrassment in his eyes.
‘I forgot to ask before… And I was just wondering… What’s your name?’
He smiles again, and you could swear it’s like rays of sunlight striking your heart.
‘I’m Zhoumi. And you?’
