topsy turvy

Chewing on time. And my anxieties settle.

Have you ever heard someone smile? Listen carefully next time.

Purely for my satisfaction in writing lists (and the absolute lack of something to do). A way of organising my head. What do I like right now? Ready..

Wolfmother - White Unicorn, Beck - Que onda guero?, Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict A Riot, The Arcade Fire - Rebellion, Goldfrapp - Ride A White Horse, Queens Of The Stoneage - Little Sister, The Black Crowes - Lickin', Madonna - Sorry, The Strokes - Heart In A Cage, Sarah Blasko - Flame Trees, Queen - Friends Will Be Friends, The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself, Ben E. King - Stand By Me, Kanye West & Lupe Fiasco - Touch The Sky, Michael Jackson - Rock With You, Youth Group - Forever Young, Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up.

Lickin' makes me grin in it's nastiness. Wolfmother reminds me of 60's/70's psychedelia rock with metal. Kaiser Chiefs are absolute party fun. Rebellion has that uplifting Coldplay thing (a bit more rocking than Keane).

Found this article: Rolling Stone Very interesting.

"Kids go through hard rock, hip-hop and pop very quickly, and then they're hungry for something else," says E Street Band guitarist and garage-rock DJ Steven Van Zandt "They always end up coming to [classic] rock & roll."

Totally what happened to me.

Why would kids born in the Nineties turn to timeworn guitar anthems? For all of the vibrant rock recorded in the past ten years -- from pop punk to neogarage to dance rock -- no new, dominant sound has emerged since grunge in the early Nineties. "I can't think of a record recently that blew people's minds," says Jeff Peretz, a Manhattan producer and guitar teacher. "And there aren't really any guitar heroes around anymore. Kids don't come in and say, 'I want to play like John Mayer.'"

I want to play like John Mayer. And I've said that to my guitar teacher. People don't get how good he is. Plus Jack White is a total guitar hero. And Elephant has consistently blew many people's minds. Even American Idiot is one. Billy Joe Armstrong isn't as accomplished a player as John Mayer but he still gets the kids playing. It's simple but effective playing.
I think we will look back and realise there was a sound. It wasn't dominant but it's there. It's called 'New Rock'. A new spin on an old sound. It emerged in the early 00's with all the 'The' bands and then UK bands followed. There's definately a sort of coexistance of Alternative Rock and New Rock that's happening right now. It's not as popular as the pop-punk and hip-hop that you see on Video Hits, it kinda simmers below the surface of that stuff. And occasionaly something breaks through the surface. That's when you start seeing 14 year old kids lining up to see The Killers or Jet or something.
One thing that annoys me about The Grammys, who puts Coldplay down as rock and the White Stripes as Alternative? When its convenient for them I guess.
