Title: Why Him, Part 3 (Or perhaps, simply, "Why me?"
Author: shy_vi
Pairing: TutixNagayan
Warnings: None, worksafe
Rating: PG
Word Count: I don't know.
Author's note: This is COMPLETELY rough. I jotted this down over a month ago, and it was right in the same vein as all of these, so I thought I'd type it up and post it.
"Takashi," Tuti said, out of nowhere, one afternoon, while they were sitting in one of their favorite cafes, studying scripts and just enjoying the presence of each other. "Why me?"
"Why you, what?" Takashi said lazily. "Have you forgotten something again?"
"No..." Tuti had that look on his face, the one that clearly said, 'I'm overthinking things again.' "I mean, why do you waste your time on someone like me?"
Takashi put his script down, startled by the question. "I don't 'waste my time'," he said slowly, emphasizing every syllable. "What exactly are you saying? Why would you suggest such a thing?"
"You could spend time with anyone," Tuti said, trying to put into words one of those undefinable, nagging feelings that he allowed to enslave him. "Someone more dependable, someone who shows up on time, who drinks less, who isn't rude and who can- can handle the pressure of his job and who can keep the house clean--"
"I could," Takashi agreed, mildly. "But why would I, when I would miss out on clear perspective, high energy and sheer talent? I could spend my time with any pretty, personable, cookie-cutter actor on the streets of Tokyo. I could. And I would be bored out of my mind way too quickly. You know I prefer to be challenged."
"By what?" Tuti asked, with one of his self-deprecating grins. "Stupid questions?"
"By passion and brilliance. Why do you think directors cast you, over and over? Have you not been paying attention to the polls from the *pnish* TV show? Tsucchi," he said, putting his hand down emphatically on top of the script, resting on the table. "No one else could have played Gin. You know that, don't you? The Burimyu stood such a chance of being campy and ridiculous, but it wasn't. And don't think that you had nothing to do with it. Could Tatsuya have done what he did if he wasn't surrounded by good actors- good actors working hard at what they do?"
"You- you think I'm responsible for influencing Tatsuya in some way?" Tuti looked uncomfortable. "It's not like I sat down and taught him anything. You're giving me way too much credit."
"No," insisted Takashi. "You challenged every cast member to match your level of intensity-- in fact, that's just the challenge I'm talking about. I work so much harder, and give so much more of myself, when I see how much you are willing to give, and how much of a risk you are willing to take." He shook his head. "No, you don't want to see it, because you are afraid that people might start depending on you for things. And--" he didn't allow Tuti to interrupt, though he could tell the other man wanted to-- "the main reason you don't want people depending on you is because you are certain you will let them down." Tuti really didn't have much of an answer for that. "That's really what this discussion is about, isn't it? You are certain that I have made a mistake, and you are questioning my judgment because you are so sure you are going to let me down. Disappoint me.
"Well, let me tell you this, Tsuchiya Yuuichi: there is only one thing you could do on this earth that would disappoint me. Only one. And that would be giving up. If you gave up, if you turned your back on every last bit of talent that you possess, I would probably die from the force of my disappointment.
"But that's why you're lucky I'm around. Because I will not give up on you, and I will never, ever allow you to give up on yourself."
