PAYRATE: $16.14 - $17.46 PER HOUR

Applicants must have aviculture experience. Knowledge of artificial incubation and hand rearing of baby birds is desirable. A Life Science degree or equivalent specialized training is preferred. Applicants must be available to work any of the seven days of the week, mornings or evenings, approximately 40 hours per week.
Under general supervision, feeds and provides for the general care and welfare of assigned exhibit animals (either mammals, reptiles or birds); cleans exhibit enclosures and contiguous areas; provides exhibit security; and performs related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: A Keeper performs a wide range of semi-routine functions at either the Zoo or the Wild Animal Park. This class is distinguished from the next higher class, Senior Keeper, by the fact that the Senior Keeper works under minimal supervision and may serve as a lead person on occasional group assignments. This class also requires the operation of light and medium equipment such as dump trucks, skiploaders, forklifts, water trucks and other vehicles.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Prepares food and water for exhibit animals by cutting, measuring portions and adding nutrient or supplements; loads and unloads food from trucks; feeds exhibit animals; administers prescribed medication; keeps feeding records; observes assigned animals closely with regard to general appearance, diet consumption levels, condition of fecal matter, etc. and reports abnormal conditions to superiors; cleans exhibit areas, pools, animal sleeping areas and service areas; cleans and disinfects utensils, work tools and containers; may maintain plant life within or around exhibit areas; maintains appropriate health and behavior records on assigned animals; responds to questions from the public concerning exhibits; provides exhibit security and takes appropriate action to prevent vandalism or maltreatment of animals by the public; participates in capturing, incapacitating and moving animals; assists medical staff in treating animals; performs minor or routine maintenance on exhibit enclosures and reports other maintenance needs; may assist in installing, repairing and maintaining irrigation systems in exhibit areas; and operates a variety of light and medium equipment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
General Knowledge of:
- Animal behavior. - Care, feeding and handling of wild animals; - Safety practices around wild animals. - Animal biology; zoology. - Techniques for restraining or capturing wild animals. - Zoological Society policies, procedures and regulations.

Oh yeah and the one thing I don't like about CAL U is that they don't place you in internships. You have to make the connections yourself. Other schools have Career Placement, that after you are done with college there are jobs lined up for you. This thing sucks.
