Как сообщил френд a_garvey, мэром города Миссиссога в очередной раз стала женщина по имени Хэйзел Маккалион (Hazel McCallionСначала пару слов про город. Миссиссога -- это в каком-то смысле пригород Торонто. Просто потому что рядом находится. Но он и сам по себе вполне убедителен -- шестой по величине в Канаде. По приятной случайности, именно в нём живёт

Миссиссога была деревней в семидесятых. Огромной, но по сути деревней. Теперь это огромный (по канадским меркам) город, процветающий экономически. Не все в этом заслуга мэра, конечно, но долгов у города нет, бюджет в отличном состоянии, местные налоги меньше, чем в соседних городах, многие крупные бизнесы перебрались в Миссиссогу. Сравнение с вечным банкротом Торонто играет в пользу Миссиссоги и ее мэра.

Вот еще: Mississauga is debt free, one of the best run cities, fiscally, in the country, something most other municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area can only look at with envy.

McCallion used lower taxes in Mississauga to attract businesses from its much more expensive neighbour, Toronto, to help increase the city's growth and create jobs. It's now the third largest city in Ontario and the sixth largest in Canada, with a population of 734,000. (отсюда)

That changed with an explosion that rocked the city Nov. 10, 1979. A freight train hauling chlorine gas derailed, spewing toxins into the air and prompting Mississauga to evacuate more than 220,000 residents.

McCallion took charge. She rushed from meetings to press conferences, spraining an ankle along the way.

For the rest of the crisis, the international media watched as Mississauga's barely five-foot-tall lady mayor hobbled about on crutches, outworking sturdy-ankled men half her age.

"She was a goddess from there on in," said Lenyk. "Even people who drank beer at the bar thought of her as their general."
