Well, well, well. A brand spanking new year.
A lot of people moaned on their facebook, about how crap 2011 was for them. This always surprises me. Don't we all have a choice to look at things in a happy light?
My entire 2011 is going to be one of the most memorable years of my life. I did so many crazy things, experienced so much, saw more of South Africa, made friends, lost friends, opened myself up to change, love my family more (if that's possible) and most especially, got to know myself better.
It started out so wonderfully, because I had postponed going to the Philippines for half a year, just so I could be there to see my best friend get married and hold my youngest niece at her christening. I mended a broken friendship and fought with my mom less. Other highlights of the year include: Meeting my partner's Aunt and hoidaying in Hartenbos. In the area I got to ride an ostrich, see some caves, finally saw Knysna (which I think is very commercialised and a bit overrated-- a pity. Its natural beauty is breathtaking), and went swimming for the first time in almost 10 months since I got back home from the Philippines.
I marked my eight year in SA. I saw Tori Amos live (childhood icons will forever be larger than life), finished my first 1K open water swim and let go of a few things, confessed sins to an old friend, he forgave me anyway, learned some painful truths about myself and accepted them anyway.
My skin is stinging from being under the sun too long yesterday, because alcohol is the best sunblock, you don't actually notice how scorching the sun is until you sober up again. A small price to pay for a gorgeous day at the beach. A beautiful, peaceful start to the year.
Nobody is perfect true and I know that despite my bad points, I have a lot of great points (although some people have to gently remind me of this sometimes). I used to think that because I have to live with myself, I had to like myself. Now, I actually enjoy being alone with myself.
As I make plans for the year, I expect nothing but great times ahead. And every time I look back at the past recent or older, I shall reflect upon it with kindness.
