A list of happy

I haven't made a list in years. Ten things that make me smile despite weeks of continuous rain: Curious that this happens more when it's rainy.

1) When you get the hiccups in the middle of the night and you rouse me from a deep sleep because my head is bouncing on your chest and I'm laughing and hanging on for dear life because I don't want to wake you.

2) Wildflowers springing up everywhere, in places I least expect, like on top of a fallen concrete pillar that isn't such an eyesore after all.

3) The happy chorus of croaks and crickets rubbing their legs and the lazy buzz of bees, because their wings are weighed down by drizzle. And the white arum lilies so very stark because the cement wall is darkened wet by the water.

4) When the wind makes the rain slant like sleek and impossibly beautiful silver arrows aiming straight for my face while I'm driving, and I fight the silly urge to duck.

5) Having to wear my novelty animal print underwear because the dryer is making weird squeaking noises and I'm too scared to use it so everything is damp. The sound is something between an agonised caterwauling and the dying strains of an out-of-tune violin, attempting a swan song.

6) Puddles, puddles everywhere, reflecting the drab, dirty town of Port Shepstone into something magical and mythical.

7) Leaves stay so verdantly green and looking crisp enough to eat-- which I won't.

8) My beautiful blue ocean looking so much more alive for the white peaks cresting and staying steel grey and constantly in motion... after all "it's the waves that let you know the ocean is alive." (Dar Williams said that I think.)

9) Sharing a hot cup of coffee over conversation is all the more precious because it keeps me warm.

10) Reminding me to thank God that I'm alive to appreciate all these seemingly insignificant little things.
