i moved into my new place on monday; i am now a real parisienne, i guess.
i live on the border between the 5th and 6th arrondissements, right at the luxembourg gardens, the sorbonne university, st michel (the main 'nightlife' street according to the paris tour guides), and a million markets, restaurants, patisseries, fruit stands, fish mongers, bookstores, little movie theatres, hookah bars, et cetera. i live in a 'petite chambre de bonne au huitieme etage'. there is a view of the eiffel tower from one window and the pantheon from the other. i love it so much & i am so happy it's a little bit ridiculous.
i love getting lost but not feeling lost because i am just exploring down the little side streets that lead to statues, fountains, museums, shops, parks; i love my friends and the classes that i am hoping to take (registration is tomorrow); i love that my rent is less than what i paid in halifax and that this, according to all the housing advisors, makes me the luckiest girl in paris (although i think that is for more reasons than that); i love listening to yann tiersen in my room with both the windows & door open & having the wind blow through; i love the feeling of opportunity & light that i feel here; i love making plans & lists, but only in my head, of the things & places that i want to do & go; i love speaking french & feeling it improve daily (i am surprising myself and am basically fluent); i love my landlady & how she is exactly like the one from amelie, who saves the letters from her lover, mixed with aretha franklin; i love taking the metro & looking at all the graffiti & understanding the desire to claim ownership of a little bit of paris & declare a permanency of the self in that place, because i feel it too. i am enjoying the process, & excited for it to develop, of feeling like paris is becoming a little bit mine.
i'm reading 'a moveable feast,' hemingway's short novel written in hindsight about his experience in paris in the 20's. i live in the same neighbourhood that he lived in & it's neat reading about how things have changed & how they are the same.
