SPN 5x13 Ramblings (I blame TNT reruns) + MUSE songs

Jun 27, 2012 13:00

So this morning, TNT had Supernatural's 5x13/"The Song Remains the Same" airing and within the first 5 minutes, I was taken with how much I LOVE about this episode. I remember really enjoying the ep when it first aired, but I didn't expect all those FEELS to come back full-force over 2 years later!

I mean... can we please just take a couple of minutes to discuss the following:
  • Anna & Castiel. Damn it, damn it, damn it, there is so much tension between the two and I just NEED MORE BACKGROUND INFO, OKAY?! I've pretty much enjoyed their relationship all the way since 4x16 (On the Head of a Pin). You can see how it's breaking Cas inside, just realizing that Anna is now the enemy and no longer an ally, a comrade. I need more, guys! Fic? Vids?
  • Castiel and boys. Cas wasn't around much in this episode, but when he was, he was giving his all for the boys and GOSH. Cas, why do you have to care so much?! Ugh, with your "I don't understand that reference!" and your "I'm fine" promptly before coughing blood and passing out and your "I'm very surprised" after your return with slight smile and unconsciousness. Sorry. I just use these early eps to think about what happens at the end of S6 and the start of S7 and it kills me dead. (Also - "Sam is my friend." AHHHH!!!)
  • John and Mary. John and Dean. John and Sam. Mary and Dean. Mary and Sam. Basically all possible combinations of the Winchester family. I can't, ok. So many feels.
1. John and Mary. Can we talk about that pre-dinner scene where John tries to snag some food and Mary is all "Not until you've washed up" and they kiss and it's just so adorable! They had, like, what maybe 10 years of that (at the most) before Mary was killed. Damn you, Kripke. Damn you. Also, the final scene of the ep. KILLS ME DEAD. YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. ROMANTIC AND BITTERSWEET AND SHUDDER-WORTHY, WHAT?! So blissfully unaware! WHY, KRIPKE, WHY!?!

2. John and Dean. When John finds out about the hunting business and he feels angry and betrayed that his wife life to him all these years, but his main concern is how he can protect her so he fuels all that anger and uses it to make a sigil and Dean sees this transformation in his father and he's basically thinking that this is how his father got involved in this business. This is how it went down, except 100 times worse, because in reality, John's first exposure to hunting was founded on revenge for his wife, and not her protection.

3. John and Sam. There's nothing I can really say about THAT scene that hasn't been said a thousand times before so I'll just leave it alone before I start openly weeping. JUST! God, Sam. You have so many regrets. And you don't even know if your talk with your father now will even be worth a damn thing (and it isn't, because their memories are wiped), but you just had to try, didn't you? SAMMY!!!

4. Can we take a moment to discuss John as a character alone? The way he talks about "fathers protecting children" makes me think that John knew about Mary's pregnancy and he so much wants to be a good dad before he's even really presented with children and it's JUST SO HEARTBREAKING that he's basically chastising himself for his own future mistakes without even knowing about them. JOHN WINCHESTER, YOU TRIED YOUR BEST. YOU DID. *sobs* Not to mention that fact that he lies about having a job because he doesn't want to worry Mary or disappoint his soon-to-be blossoming family. He has so much pride and stubbornness and it's like a friggin' Greek tragedy that it will be this pride and stubbornness to ruin his relationship to his boys. But ironic that's it's not pride that's HIS OWN downfall and death, but love. Love for Dean. To give up his own life to keep Dean's going and I think he knows that he'd do something like that if he had to, even in 1978, which goes back to his adamant speeches and actions (slicing his own hand wide open, bitches, like a BAMF) about protecting his family.

5. Mary and Sam. You know what I love about Sam meeting Mary, here. It's that he's basically meeting a storybook character. Sam was only 6 months old when his mother died and he doesn't have any memories of her, unlike Dean. Everything he knows about the woman has been told to him by his father (sparingly, I believe. I don't think John would have enough in him to openly talk about his wife too much) and his brother (also sparingly - remember how emotional Dean gets when he mentions to Sam how Mary believed in angels in 2x13/"Houses of the Holy"). Mary is practically a fairytale for Sam. Something intangible, illusive. She is nothing but a string of words put together by his father and brother. Nothing but long blonde hair and a warm smile is a picture or two of her. She's not his mom, not in the traditional sense, not like she was for Dean. But then Sam MEETS her. He honest-to-God meets her for more than a minute (like he did with Mary's ghost in "Home") and he's entranced. He's sooo overcome with emotion (look at his gaping mouth when Mary opens the door), he can't even talk to her because he feels like it's a twisted dream - finally meeting his mother when he's in his late 20s and she's not even technically his mother yet. FEELS.

6. Mary and Dean. Mary and Dean's relationship is just so beautiful because Dean probably has maybe 10 or so memories about her because he was so young, but he remembers enough to know that she meant the world to home. That she was always the one to make him feel better when he was sick or scared or hurt. Dean still looks at his mom like a 4-year-old would and it's so sad when they realize that she was never there to see how her boys turned out. The specificity to Dean's memories is heartwrenching - "Hey Jude" ... can you imagine growing up through the years and your mind going back to moment in your life where life was actually good before it got shot to hell, every time you hear a song? Don't get me started on how much I such wanted to grab Mary and hug her during that scene either. She's basically being told that all of the plans she ever had for her future will not only never come true, but they will be completely subverted!!! She gets out of the hunting business, only for her sons, her innocent little boys that she only ever wanted to keep safe and happy, turn into hunters because of her husband. Because of HER - of what happened to her. It's so unfair.

7. Mary as her own character. Let me just say she and John were literally made for each other, because she is perhaps even MORE of a BAMF that her husband. So she's pregnant, and she still goes toe to toe with an angel like nobody's business. She's so well-rounded as a character - her desires, her abilities, her beliefs, I just love it.

Season 8 - more John and Mary Winchester, okay?! Young or old, don't care. Just want them.

  • In the big revelation scene where Dean and Sam tell Mary they're her sons and urge her to leave John before the future is set in motion, Mary reveals that she can't, because it's "too late" - aka, already pregnant. BUT she's pregnant with Dean. Dean is NOT Lucifer's vessel, Sam is. If she were to have Dean and not have Sam, things should have turned out okay, right? Because Sam wouldn't have been on Azazel's radar so Mary wouldn't have died and no one would've been a hunter. I love how even the writers are like - "well, no, we can't mention that because it's absurd to have Dean without Sam. Impossible. They're a pair. Items sold together, not separately, and that's that!" lol
  • Umm, the Michael and Dean scene was so well-done, but I think that's been talked about enough. I do want to mention how wonderful of a job Jensen does in his interactions with Michael. Dean's clearly hurt and in a helluva lot of pain, but he masks his pain every time Michael looks at him. He only grimaces or lets his pain show through when Michael's turned away from him. He's gotta keep his game-face on. It's subtle, but great. And Matt Cohen does an amazing job as Michael (although I like his John portrayal more, probably just because I like John more as a character).
So this episode rocked my world, for the third time! lol.

If anyone has any fic recs, vid recs, about this ep or the characters surrounding the ep, I'd be very grateful! :D

Now my ramblings are over, I promise. But in anticipation of the new Muse single (that's going to be the song for the 2012 Summer London Olympics, WHAT!) that's coming out today, here's some Muse love:
