As you all know, I recently obtained my driver's license. Well, last Saturday, I went car shopping. My mom and her boyfriend in tow, I looked at everything from Saabs to Foci to Accords. Tired from hours of searching, prodding, test-driving, and generally having no real luck, we proceeded to head home. We decided to try one last used car lot, mostly due to my mom's boyfriend's persuasion. He was right to encourage us to try this lot. They had several promising cars, and I came -this- close to buying a little Nissan. Then I saw her; the car I would buy. The car I've now dubbed 'Sheila'.
Sheila is a 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport; a beefed up version of the Subaru Impreza wagon. She sports a 142 horsepower, 4-cylinder EJ22 'boxer' engine, computer-controlled automatic transmission, and full-time all wheel drive. She has just over 66,000 miles on her, and was previously a 1-owner lease car. She was manufactured in Japan by Fuji Heavy Industries, LTD; which sounds all japano-cyberpunk.
She's very easy to drive, which helps me feel more confident on the road. I confess, I still get -very- nervous behind the wheel sometimes. I suspect these moments of sheer terror will subside with experience; even if in the back of my head I'll still know that piloting a motor vehicle is without a doubt the most dangerous daily task we put ourselves through. I enjoy the added freedom of driving, in contrast, I'm not so fond of the risk and responsibility; but that's how life works. I certainly wouldn't mind a world where driving was relegated to a hobby/speciality role, and day-to-day life could be accomplished with efficient mass transit; but for now, here in the midwest, that's a distant dream; so I'll keep hurtling into the breech, driving myself to work, until the screams in my head fade. ;)
Without further rambling from me, here's a small (640x480) picture. If you click it, it will take you to a page with several more pictures. These other pictures are in their full size, so don't go there if you don't want to load them.
