Yesterday was national kissing day, and I was talking about how it would have been a good excuse for a kiss meme, and how it seemed those kind of themed memes seemed to have died out a little

It's backstage at Lollapalooza, and there are hundreds of people milling about. Bebe's getting used to the festival scene from this side of the stage, but it still overwhelms her. Smaller clubs are more her speed when it comes to the behind the scenes, even though she loves shouting her words out over a vast sea of bodies.
She hasn't seen Pete for a couple of hours, but that's not too unusual. He's good at getting them all in on the press, but sometimes people just care about him, and he's got to deal with that. She knows this is harder for him, too, and not just because Gabe, Travis, and William called her. All the bullshit about him versus Patrick, Fall Out Boy versus Black Cards versus Patrick's solo stuff, all those questions about whether or not 'hiatus' means 'over forever' that they all thought had died are coming up again. People asking Pete if he's sticking around for Patrick's show - "I'd love to, but we've got another gig tomorrow." - or if he's jealous of Patrick - "No way, man. I'm his biggest fan." - and what 'hiatus' means are cropping up again, and since they're on first, Pete's bearing the brunt of it.
She moves out of the way of three guys and a girl carrying a metal girder, backing up into someone. "Oh, man. Sorry." She turns and finds herself face to face with Patrick. "Oh. Hi."
"Hey." He smiles easily, and she has to smile back. They got on well in the studio, even when things were strained between him and Pete, too much like old times too soon, and he's exceedingly nice. "You're not a diversionary tactic, are you?"
"Pardon?"
"Like, Pete didn't send you out to lead the press to me so he could escape?" He's still smiling so she shakes her head. "Whew."
"Your turn will come. We're leaving right after our show."
"I know, but I'm trying to avoid the awkwardness of them nabbing us both at the same time."
She nods. "I can see the value in that." She tilts her head toward the tent that they have set up for them. It's not much, but they don't need much, really. For this round of shows they have a bus, even though it seems kind of extravagant, but Pete has Bronx, and it just makes it easier on them all. "You want to hide out in our hideout?"
They're both short enough that they can hide behind taller people as they duck and run for the tent, stumbling in laughing. Patrick's face is tinted pink, his cheekbones flushed bright in the weird filtered light. "Very posh."
"One more day, and all this could be yours."
He grins and settles on one of the folding chairs. "Wow. Nothing but the best for you guys, huh?"
"Pete's chair is actually a throne, but it wouldn't fit in the tent, so we put it out by the Honey Buckets."
"Master of his domain." Patrick taps out a rhythm on his thigh and Bebe smiles. "Pete says you're always making music, even when you're just sitting still."
"I suppose. He's the same way. Lyrics in his head, breaking on the rocks in there like waves."
"Nice and insulting."
"That's Pete." Patrick looks at her. "Is he in love with you?"
"No." Everyone warned her that he would be, but Bebe thinks they all underestimated him. Or maybe they just refused to believe even Peter Pan can grow up. "Are you in love with him?"
"Kind of. Always." Patrick grins ruefully. "It's like a marriage, me and him. Only we went the trial separation route, not full-on divorce."
"Does that make Fall Out Boy your baby?"
"And these are our bastard step-children." He laughs. "So if I kiss you, I'm pretty sure it's incest."
"I hear that's big in your circles."
He chokes, like he doesn't expect the comeback, like he's underestimated her. "God, he made you read all the bandom primers on LiveJournal, didn't he?"
"Only the ones for the sexy bands." She settles on his lap, her skull skirt flaring out over both of their thighs. "Is this about Pete?"
"No. Just getting him out of the way." Patrick reaches up, tracing her jaw. "He takes up a lot of room."
"Larger than life."
"He's not here now."
"No," she agrees, licking her dark red lips and leaning in. The first brush is soft, tentative and he breathes like a singer. She feels it stutter across her lips before she kisses him again. "Just us."

I love that Bebe gives as good as she gets, and that while it is new for her she can hold her own.
And that while Pete is so huge for them both, this moment is about only them.

Being in league with Pete means you'd better be willing to give as good as you get and get as good as you give and have a thick skin. It also makes everything both easier and harder than it has to be.

Pete is always going to be there. I think that's something they're having to learn to live with and accept. I think Bebe's learning what it means and Patrick's learning that it's not always as bad as it seems during the rough spots. UGH. I kind of love them.
