http://turnthepageover.livejournal.com/81891.html “Dude, your phone has been going crazy,” Vinny told me as I walked up to the front of the bar.
“Has it? That’s weird. Everyone knows I’m at work. I don’t know why they’d be calling me,” I told him, furrowing my eyebrows and picking up my phone.
I felt a nervous feeling in my stomach as I saw numerous missed calls from both my mom and Jack, finding his phone number first and hitting call.
“I’ll be right back,” I told Vinny as I walked back into the kitchen area, pressing the phone to my ear.
“Hello.”
“Jack, what’s going on? I have like ten missed calls from you and my mom. Is something wrong?”
“Yeah, something happened,” he said and my heart sunk.
“What happened?”
“Your dad had a heart attack.”
I paused, looking down at the counter and biting my lip.
“I don’t know how to feel right now,” I told him honestly.
“I know that. But, Alex, your mom is beside herself. She really needs you. You need to go up to the hospital and be with her,” he told me and I sighed.
“Jack, I-“
“Don’t be like that, Lex.”
“But he-“
“He is your father. Regardless of anything that has happened over the years, babe, he is your father. And I know you would never forgive yourself if you had the opportunity to find some kind of resolution and you didn’t take it.”
I sighed, staring down at the worn out boots on my feet.
“I’m going to meet you up there in twenty minutes.”
“Jack, you don’t need to go to the hospital. He isn’t your-“
“Alex, you are my family. You’re the father of my children, so yes, your family is my family and I will stand by and be there for them in a time of need,” he told me, tone stern. “I dropped Josie off at my mom’s. I’m on my way there right now. I’ll see you when you get here.”
“Okay,” I told him, nodding my head although he couldn’t see me. “I’ll be there as soon as I can. I love you.”
“I love you too,” he answered.
I hung up the phone, putting it on my pocket and leaning back against the counter behind me. I closed my eyes for a second, taking a deep breath before leaving the kitchen.
“Everything okay, bro?” Vinny asked as dried off some glasses, putting them away under the counter.
“No, actually,” I told him and he gave me a concerned look.
“What’s going on?”
“My dad had a heart attack,” I told him, feeling a strange feeling wash over me as the words left my lips.
“Fuck, dude. Are you okay?”
“Yeah. I just need to get up to the hospital-“
“Go,” Vinny said, nodding.
“I can’t just leave you here by yourself.”
“I’ll be fine. I’ll call Flyzik and have him come in.”
“It’s his day o-“
“He’s not going to care, Alex. It’s your dad,” he said and my stomach churned.
“Okay,” I said, nodding slowly.
“I’ll see you later, man. Are you coming back to the apartment tonight?”
“No, I’m staying with Jack,” I told him as I shrugged on my coat and he gave me a half smile.
“Good. Text me later and let me know what’s going on, alright?” he said and I nodded.
“I will,” I told him, moving to leave the bar and feeling him clap me on the shoulder.

I parked my car in the lot for the Emergency Room, getting out and walking towards the door. I saw a tall figure standing out by the doors, shuffling their feet in the light snow on the sidewalk as they wrapped the arms of a black boat tightly around themselves.
“What the hell are you doing? Get your pregnant ass inside! It’s freezing out here!” I told Jack as I walked closer to him, and he lifted his head and shot me a glare.
“Excuse me?! No, you get your ass in that hospital and go hug your poor mother!” he exclaimed, pointing and furrowing his eyebrows angrily, and I smiled softly to myself.
“Your pregnancy hormones are so cute,” I told him, pecking his lips and feeling him pull away.
“You can’t stand out here and kiss me while your dad is in there munching on baby aspirins, Alex,” he told me and I bit my lip.
“I am terrified to go in there,” I told him, feeling his cold hands cup my face.
“I know, but it’s gonna be okay,” he said, nodding and looking down at me with wide brown eyes and I nodded back. “Come on.”
He let go of my face, grabbing my hand and lacing my fingers between his own as he led me through the Emergency Room doors.
I looked around the waiting room, searching for my mother and finding her sitting in a corner chair, tissue clutched in her hand as she stared tearily at a set of doors.
“Mom,” I said as I came closer, clutching desperately to Jack’s hand as I pulled him along with me.
“Oh, Alex!” she exclaimed, standing up and throwing her arms around me. Jack pulled his hand away from mine and I wrapped my arms around her shaking form. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
“What’s going on? Have they told you anything?” I asked her, seeing her dab at her eyes as she pulled away.
“No. The doctor said they’ll come out and let me know as soon as they can,” she said and I nodded, guiding her to sit down.
“I’ll be right back. I’m going to go get you some tea,” Jack told her and she nodded, smiling wearily at him.
“How long has he been back there?” I asked her.
“It’s been about an hour,” she said, shaking her head and looking down at her hands. “I can’t believe this is happening. It all just happened so quickly. He was just reading his paper and next thing I know he was yelling at me to call an ambulance.”
“I’m sorry, mom,” I told her, taking her hand and covering it with my own.
“Alex, I want you to make me a promise,” she said, looking up at me seriously and I nodded gently.
“What is it?”
“If everything works out tonight, I want you and your father to work this out. I don’t want our family like this anymore, Alex.”
“Okay,” I said, nodding and squeezing her hand. “I’ll try my best.”
“Don’t just say that because I’m upset and you want to make me feel better.”
“I really will, mom,” I told her, smiling gently. “And everything is going to be fine.”
Jack came back around the corner, handing each of us a Styrofoam cup filled with hot tea.
“Thank you, sweetheart,” she told him and he nodded, sitting down next to me.
“Where’s yours?” I asked and he shook his head.
“I’m fine.”
“We can share,” I offered but he shook his head again.
“Mrs. Gaskarth?” I heard a voice ask, turning my attention to see a doctor standing at the entrance of the waiting room.
“Yes?” my mom questioned, standing up and looking eagerly at the doctor for news. “How is my husband? Is he okay? Can I see him?”
“Your husband is alright. We’ve stabilized him and he’s awake now,” the doctor said, and I could see reassurance washing over her face. “He’s actually asking for an Alex. Is he here?”
“Th-that’s me,” I said, furrowing my eyebrows.
“Alex is his son,” my mom told the doctor, nodding vigorously.
“Well, Alex, if you’ll follow me I can take you back to see your father,” the doctor said and I stared at him in disbelief, turning my wide eyes to look at Jack.
“Go,” he said, shoving my shoulder gently.
I opened my mouth to reply and he shook his head.
“Just go. I’ll be waiting here when you get back,” he said, squeezing my hand quickly before nodding his head in the doctor’s direction.
I nodded back at him, getting up and following him through the set of doors my mom had been staring down.
