“Hey, hot stuff,” I heard a voice say as I left the doors of the apartment building.

“Hey,” I answered, grinning at Rian, who looked especially cute standing in the light snowfall bundled up in his scarf and hat. “You could haven’t waited in the car.”

“I didn’t want you to miss me,” he answered, handing me a small Starbucks cup full of something warm and placing a soft kiss on my lips.

“I would have found your car, I am coming with you, dork,” I answered, rolling my eyes and grinning. “It’s freezing out here.”

“I know. Where’s your scarf?” he asked, grabbing my hand and pulling me along with him towards his car.

“I don’t have one,” I said with a shrug and he scoffed.

“You need a scarf. You have a baby,” he said, letting go of my hand and tugging his from his neck. “Here.”

“I’m fine,” I said, reaching out to open the car door.

“No, here,” he said, wrapping the scarf around my neck gently before grabbing the handle and opening the door for me.

I touched the soft material around my neck as I watched him walk around to the other side of the car, smiling softly to myself. I had never had a guy treat me so nicely before.

“Okay, everything’s looking excellent in there. The baby’s a good size and has a nice strong heartbeat,” the doctor said, moving the wand around against my lower stomach as she took a few pictures. “Are you interested in finding out the sex today, Alex?”

“Hell yeah,” I answered, grinning and hearing her chuckle.

“Okay. Let’s see if we can get the little guy or gal to show us,” she said, moving the wand.

I glanced over at Rian, seeing him watching the black and white screen curiously. I smiled to myself, turning my attention back to it as I heard the doctor hum.

“Got it!” she exclaimed excitedly. “Do you wanna take a guess?”

I squinted my eyes at the screen, unsure of what I was even looking at before huffing.

“No! Just tell me now!” I said and she laughed.

“Looks to me like you’re having a little girl,” she said with a smile and I grinned, feeling like I was going to explode with happiness.

“A girl?! It’s a girl?!” I exclaimed, seeing her nod. “I knew it!”

“Congratulations,” she told me, clicking a few buttons as she took pictures.

I looked back at Rian, seeing him smiling fondly down at me.

“It’s a girl,” I repeated, seeing him nod. “I’m gonna have a daughter.”

“Yes you are,” he answered.

I reached my hand out towards him and he grabbed it, intertwining our fingers. I squeezed his hand, looking down as the doctor cleaned off my stomach, unable to wipe the grin off my face.

“I am so freaking excited!” I grinned, tugging on Rian’s hand enthusiastically as we walked to his car and he laughed.

“I can tell,” he said, squeezing my hand.

“My baby girl,” I said, rubbing my free hand over my baby bump that was hidden beneath my leather jacket.

I felt the baby move and kick, making me grin even wider.

“She’s moving,” I told him.

“Can I feel her?” he asked.

“It might be hard over my jacket. Hold on,” I said, tugging him quickly to his car and getting in.

He got in on the other side, giving me a curious look as I unzipped my jacket.

“Here,” I said, grabbing his hand and putting it on my belly.

He rubbed it gently, looking down at my stomach with a curious expression. I felt a flutter before she kicked, making me grin as a smile spread over his face.

“That’s awesome,” he said, rubbing it again as she kicked.

“She likes you,” I told him, grinning.

“I like her too,” he said, making me giggle.

“She knows you make her daddy happy,” I said, laying my hand over his on my stomach.

“Good, ‘cause he makes me happy too,” he said, moving his thumb so it flicked over mine.

“Thank you,” I told him, leaning my head back against the headrest, “for coming with me. It means a lot.”

He didn’t answer, leaning forward and pressing a gentle kiss to my lips.

“What do you wanna do to celebrate?”

“I wanna go buy stuff for my baby girl!” I exclaimed and he laughed.

“We can do that.”

*****

“Did I go overboard?” I asked Rian as we stood in the elevator, each fisting a handful of shopping bags.

“No, babies need stuff,” he answered and I grinned. “Plus you got Jack’s baby stuff too.”

“I did. I can’t wait until he finds out what he’s having.”

“He doesn’t know yet?”

“No. He has until next week.”

“I thought he was farther along than you.”

“No, he’s just bigger,” I said, laughing.

We exited the elevator when the doors open, going towards my apartment. I unlocked the door, going inside, but not expecting to find John O’Callaghan sitting on my couch.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I questioned, raising an eyebrow and setting the bags down.

“Talking to Jack,” he responded and I put my hands on my hips.

“Well then where is Jack?”

“I was going pee. Calm down, killer,” he said, coming back into the room and rubbing his stomach.

“Sorry. Didn’t think I’d be coming home to a douchebag sitting on my couch,” I said and he smirked.

“I really don’t think you have room to be talking shit about anyone, who-”

“John, insulting my pregnant best friend is not going win you any points,” Jack warned, giving him a look. “How was your appointment?”

“It’s a girl!” I grinned, pulling one of the little pink outfits out of the bag and shoving it at him. “I told you!”

“That’s great!” he said with a smile, pulling me into a hug.

“I got you guys some stuff too!” I said, looking around for the bag. “Rian! Where’s Jack’s baby stuff!”

“In here on the table!” he called out from the kitchen and I waved Jack to follow me.

“What is he doing here?” I asked Jack quietly as I pulled his stuff out of the bag.

“He showed up with Chick-fil-A and went on and on about how he wants another chance and he’s changed.”

“Are you giving him one?”

“I told him he has a lot of proving himself to do to make it up to me. But I’m not just going to keep his kid from him.”

“Just be careful,” I told him, rubbing my stomach and handing him the stuffed turtle I had gotten.

“Awh! Alex!”

“It’s for the baby. I know you don’t if it’s a boy or girl yet, even though I know it’s a boy. But turtles are unisex, right?”

“I don’t care! I love it!” he exclaimed and I laughed.

“Good!”
