http://turnthepageover.livejournal.com/81891.html I kept my head down as the door opened, not wanting to be poked or prodded for anymore tests the doctor wanted me to have. My eyes widened as footsteps rushed towards me, blonde hair brushing my cheek as arms were thrown around me.
“Alex?” I asked, seeing my boyfriend pull away. “What are you doing here?”
“What am I doing here? What are you doing here?! Jack, what happened?!” he asked, sitting down on the bed with me, looking at me with concern.
“I fell.”
“Cass told me you passed out!” he exclaimed, frowning.
“I didn’t pass out. I got dizzy and my vision blacked out for a second,” I told him, feeling him run his thumb over my knuckles.
“What did the doctor say?”
“I don’t know. They keep running tests but they haven’t told me anything yet.”
“How are you now?” he asked, caramel eyes softening as he looked up to mine.
“I’m okay,” I told him, watching him frown.
“You don’t have to pretend, Jack,” he told me and I sighed.
I moved my hand, catching his and intertwining our fingers, looking at our hands.
“I haven’t been fair to you, Jack. I’ve been so absorbed with my own stress and feelings that I never took the time to step back and see that you were running yourself ragged. Baby, I’m sorry,” he told me.
“It’s okay, Alex-”
“No it’s not. I was a dick and I lied to you and argued with you and now you’re laying in a hospital bed,” he told me and I chuckled.
“Alex, it’s not like you’re the one who put me in the hospital,” I told him, giving him a teasing smile. “Unless you’ve been secretly poisoning my food none of this is your fault. Relax.”
He sighed and I chuckled, opening my arms towards him. He leaned against me, hugging me back and resting his head on my shoulder.
“I love you,” I mumbled to him, kissing the shell of his ear.
“I love you too. And I’m gonna make it up to you for being a shitty boyfriend,” he told me and I laughed.
“Alright,” I told him, rolling my eyes gently.
We sat in silence for a few moments, and I watched his fingers trace random patterns on the blanket covering my hip. I hummed, headbutting him and he looked up at me.
“So, where’s Josie?” I asked.
“With my mom,” he responded, shifting himself onto the bed so he was sitting less awkwardly. “Yours should be here soon. I called her when I was on my way.”
“Oh joy,” I said, seeing him make a face.
“She’s your mother. I couldn’t not call her and tell her her son is in the hospital,” he told me and I nodded.
“I know. She’s just gonna come here and dote all over me.”
“Well maybe you need to be doted on,” he said and I rolled my eyes.
“Yeah, we’ll see,” I told him, grabbing his hand and toying with his fingers.
There was a knock on the door before it opened, revealing a slim women in a white coat that smiled at Alex and I as we entered. Alex unwound himself from me, slipping off the bed and sitting in a chair next to it as the doctor brought out my chart.
“Hello, Mr. Barakat,” she said, looking up from the paper to me and giving me a dazzling white smile that I couldn’t help but return, “my name is Dr. Evans.”
“Jack is fine,” I answered, giving her a smile and glancing over at Alex. “This is my boyfriend, Alex.”
“Hello,” she said, giving him a polite smile before turning back to me. “Alright, Jack, your results have just come back from the lab.”
“Good news, I hope,” I said and she chuckled, flipping through the papers.
“Well from what I can see, your iron levels are very low, and with the symptoms you’ve been experiencing I believe we can attribute this to iron-deficient anemia,” she explained and I raised my eyebrows.
“Really? What causes that?”
“It could be anything from a lack of iron in your diet to the pregnancy,” she explained. “It is very common in pregnancy as your iron levels get used up for both your blood and as a source of hemoglobin for the baby.”
I blinked, shaking my head for a second as she continued to look down the chart.
“It’s easily treatable, thankfully. You’ll just have to begin taking iron supplements in addition to your prenatal vitamins. You’ll be back to good in no time,” she said with a smile.
“W-wait. Pregnancy?” I asked and she raised an eyebrow. “I’m not pregnant.”
“Well, according to our bloodwork, you are,” she said with another warm smile. “Congratulations, both of you.”
I didn’t look over at Alex, not wanting to see the look on his face.
“T-thanks,” I responded, biting the inside of my cheek and forcing a smile.
“Alright, the nurse will be in a few moments to look you over before we release you. If you have any questions, let her know,” Dr. Evans said. “It was nice meeting you both.”
“Thank you, it was nice meeting you too,” I said, nodding and giving her a small half smile.
“Nice meeting you,” Alex said, voice slightly flat.
She left the room and I bit my lip, looking down at the blanket.
My stomach churned as I looked down at the white sheets, not wanting to look up at my boyfriend.
Alex didn’t say anything, and I could see movement out of the corner of my eyes as he stood up from the armchair.
“I didn’t know,” I told him quietly, twiddling my thumbs. “I swear, I didn’t. This is as much of a surprise to me as it is to you.”
“Is it?” he asked, voice off-putting.
“Yeah it is,” I said, looking up to see him staring out the window, back turned to me and arms crossed.
He didn’t say anything. He didn’t turn around to look at me. Just kept his position at the window.
“You know, it’s funny,” I started, huffing out a breath, “I would have thought you’d be upset like this when you found out about Josie, and not our second kid.”
“We talked about this, Jack,” he said, and I knew he was setting his jaw. “We aren’t ready for another baby.”
“We weren’t ready then either,” I told him, shaking my head. “What makes this any different?”
“We aren’t-”
“No, Alex! You aren’t fucking ready! You can stand there and pout because you didn’t get your way, but it doesn’t change anything. And I’m not going to apologize for being pregnant. It take two.”
“Not when one person has a hidden agenda.”
“I didn’t plan to get pregnant. Yes, I mentioned to you once that it would be nice to have another baby, but then the conversation was dropped because you were quick to nip it in the bud. And for being so against having any more kids, you aren’t very safe. When’s the last time we used a condom, Alex? Never. Don’t accuse me of going behind your back or some bogus shit like that. You were there, you were willing, you probably even fucking initiated whatever sex led to the conception. You’re just as responsible for this pregnancy as I am. So fuck you.”
He didn’t say anything and I shook my head, glaring at him.
“So much for you making it up to me for being a shitty boyfriend, huh?” I spat. “Just keep racking up the points.”
“I need to go for a walk,” he said, going towards the door and I laughed.
“Leave me here and run away. You’re good at that,” I told him. “Nothing’s ever your fault, is it, Alex?”
He didn’t answer, letting the door slam shut behind him.
I rolled my eyes, letting a strangled sound escape from my throat in frustration.
I pushed the blanket away, looking down at my flat stomach and rubbing it experimentally.
“What’s up, kid?” I muttered, resting my hand over my belly button. “Hope you like dysfunction.”
