“What happened?” I asked, wiggling my phone out of the pocket of my tight jeans and setting it on the table. “Did he come here?”

“No. Our cravings today were apparently very opposite so I went to the store to go get some food, and I ran into the dickhead while I was there,” he explained and I huffed.

“Surprised he wasn’t out having a big party with his friends,” I sneered, rolling my eyes.

“I know, shocker, right?” Jack answered, shaking his head and scooping a spoonful out of the ice cream tub next to him.

“So what did you and dickbreath talk about?” I questioned, rubbing my stomach gently.

“He asked about the baby,” he told me and I hummed, stealing the spoon from him so I could have a bite of the ice cream.

“Interesting,” I answered. “What did he ask about the baby?”

“Well, first he asked me how I was doing, which basically just was his way of asking about the pregnancy. Then he asked me if I was having a boy or girl,” he said, stealing the spoon back from me. “And I, um, kind of offered to let him know when I figure out what the gender is.”

“What did he say to that?”

“That he wanted me too. He said he’d like it if I did,” he told me and I nodded.

“He wants the baby,” I told him and he rolled his eyes.

“Alex, if he wanted this baby he wouldn’t have kicked me and this baby out of our fucking apartment,” Jack said, and I could see the anger flash into his eyes. “Don’t feed me bullshit.”

“Calm down, Mr. Mood Swing,” I said, sitting up a little straighter. “Just look at the facts. He is willingly coming up to you and asking you about the baby. He’s obviously interested in knowing stuff about him. And if he wants you to tell him when you find out that you are in fact having a little baby boy, then there has to be at least a small part of him that’s excited about his son. I’m not saying that he deserves it, but he obviously wants to be back in your life.”

“Last time you tried telling me something like this he kicked me out of our apartment, Lex. Excuse me for not buying into this,” he said, rolling his eyes and I sighed.

“I know you don’t hear this and you don’t wanna get hurt, but I’m just telling you what I think,” I told him.

“So I’m supposed to just magically take him back because he suddenly wants to claim my son after saying he wasn’t the father? Just forget that everything happened?” he defended, stabbing the ice cream with the spoon. “Is that would happen if Flyzik came back around, huh? You’d go crawling back to him?”

I gave him a dirty look, sitting up straighter and putting my hand over my bump.

“Don’t compare my situation with yours. This isn’t even remotely similar to me and Matt, and that would never fucking happen. I’m not saying you need to just jump back into his arms. I’m just saying that maybe you should give him a chance. He might’ve warmed up to the idea by now and wants to have a relationship with your son,” I told him. “I wish I had that for my daughter.”

“And whose fault is that?” he questioned, and I glared, standing up.

“Fuck you,” I huffed, picking up one of the cookies off the table and throwing it at his face. “I hope you get fat and die alone.”

I stalked out of the room, slamming my bedroom door shut.

“Special delivery,” I heard a cheery voice say, and I looked up in time to catch Rian’s dazzling white smile. I grinned, taking my coffee from him as he caught my lips in a light kiss.

“Thanks, babe,” I said, watching him sit down across from me. “Aren’t you supposed to be working?”

“I’m on my break,” he answered and I nodded. “So what’s up?”

“Just came to get my coffee fix,” I answered, holding my cup up and gesturing to it.

“You know, it would probably just be cheaper to brew your own coffee at home,” Rian teased and I raised an eyebrow.

“Um, no, ‘cause then I wouldn’t get to see your beautiful face every morning,” I said and he grinned.

“Well we wouldn’t want that to happen,” Rian said, laughing. “So how does the whole coffee thing work with being pregnant? I thought you weren’t supposed to have caffeine.”

“I’m allowed an eight ounces of coffee a day,” I explained. “So I had to cut down to a little cup once a day. It actually kinda sucks.”

“I bet,” Rian said, nodding. “You don’t know how glad I am that I don’t have to pretend I don’t know you’re pregnant anymore.”

“I’m glad I don’t have to pretend to not be pregnant anymore,” I said and he laughed.

“I’ve honestly known for a while. The baby bump kind of gave you away,” Rian teased and I rolled my eyes.

“You could have at least told me you knew. It would have saved me so much trouble,” I told him.

“You’re ridiculous,” he grinned, grabbing a hold of my free hand. “What are you doing tonight?”

“I have to work at four,” I answered and he made a face.

“Damn. Um... what are you doing at like, twelve?”

“Feeding Bump, probably,” I told him, gesturing down to my stomach.

“Why don’t you meet me at the diner. I’ll buy you guys lunch,” he said and I frowned.

“You don’t have to buy me lunch, Ri,” I objected and he shook his head.

“Let me take my boyfriend out on a lunch date, alright?”

“I can pay my half-”

“No,” he interrupted and I sighed, setting a hand on my stomach.

“Fine, but I’m paying next time,” I argued.

“Probably not,” he told me, standing up and kissing my lips. “I have to go, my break is over. I’ll see you at noon.”

“Alright,” I told him, watching him walk back behind the counter. I stood up, downing the rest of my coffee and throwing the cup into the trash.

“Hey,” I said to Jack as I walked inside, seeing him sitting on the couch with a bowl of Lucky Charms in his lap. He grunted, not even acknowledging that I was there, but keeping his eyes on the television. “Good to know I’m living with a caveman.”

I went into the kitchen, grabbing my vitamins off the counter and pulling out a bottle of water. I walked into the living room, sitting on the couch and opening the bottle.

“Did you take your prenatal today?” I asked him and he glared at me.

“Don’t mom me,” he said, setting his bowl on the table. “I can take care of myself. I’m a grown man.”

“I was just asking,” I answered, rolling my eyes. I popped the vitamin in my mouth, gagging slightly at the large pill.

“No wonder you can’t keep a boyfriend,” he snorted and I glared at him, drinking down some more water.

“I have a boyfriend, thanks,” I told him and he laughed.

“Your sad little crush on Rian doesn’t count, dickwad,” he told me.

“Actually, Rian asked me out last night. So you’re left to wallow around in self pity all by your lonesome.”

“Oh, so he’s alright with you being a whore?”

I stood up, throwing my half-empty water bottle at him.

“Will you quit throwing shit at me?!” he yelled, throwing the bottle on the floor.

“Will you quit being an asshole?!” I demanded, turning around in the hallway and glaring at him.

“Just leave me the fuck alone!”

“Gladly!”

*****

“Hey,” Rian greeted me as soon as I stepped out of my car. “What’s wrong?”

“Jack’s being a fuck,” I answered, huffing. “We got into an argument when I got home last night, and he’s been acting like a fucking child ever since.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” he said, frowning. “What are you guys arguing about?”

“His stupid bullshit baby daddy,” I told him, rolling my eyes. “It’s not a big deal. Come on, let’s go eat.”

I gave him a kiss, grabbing his hand and pulling him through the doors of the old-fashioned diner.

“Do you want a booth or sit at the bar?” I asked, turning my head to glance at him.

“Booth,” he answered, tugging on my hand to pull me towards the booth next to us.

I nodded, sitting down and making a face as I settled my hand on my stomach.

“You okay?” he asked and I nodded, rubbing my stomach soothingly.

“She’s a kicker,” I told him and he smiled.

“So you know you’re having a girl?”

“Um, not for sure, but I have a very strong feeling I am,” I explained. “I find out for sure on Tuesday.”

“Oh, cool,” he said, biting his lip as he looked up at me. “You... you don’t talk to the father any more, do you?”

“I like to pretend she was the immaculate conception,” I told him and he laughed lightly.

“I’ll take that as a no, then,” he answered and I nodded. “So, who goes to your appointments with you?”

“Jack usually does, and I go to his with him. But he has class Tuesday mornings, so I’ll be going by myself,” I told him and he nodded.

“Well, um, I could go with you... if you want...” he said, looking down and toying with the edge of his menu.

“I- I mean, if you want to. You don’t have to.”

“I do want to,” he nodded. “You shouldn’t have to do this kind of stuff alone. I want to be there for you.”

I grinned, looking down at my menu to hide it.

“Okay, cool. I can pick you up on my way to my appointment,” I offered and he nodded.

“Sounds like a plan.”

******

“Can you grab the dog food for me?” I asked Rian, opening the back of my car and picking the puppy up. I settled him in the front of my hoodie, zipping it up and cradling him. “Awh, he’s shivering.”

“I got everything. Just get the door, babe,” Rian said, and I reached into my pocket, taking out my keys to unlock the front door.

“He’s so freaking adorable. I can’t believe someone just left him outside the shop,” I said, kissing the top of the puppy’s white and brown head.

“I know. People are assholes,” Rian said and I nodded, pressing the button on the elevator. “You are allowed to have pets in your apartment, right?”

“We have a two pet rule,” I confirmed, snuggling the dog closer to me.

We stepped off the elevator as we got to my floor, moving towards the door of my apartment. I unlocked the door, leading the way inside. Jack wasn’t anywhere that I could see, but I could hear music coming from down the hallway.

“Where’s Jack?”

“He’s probably in the shower,” I told him, sitting down on the couch. I unzipped my hoodie, setting the puppy on the floor and watching him get up to sniff around.

“Where do you want this stuff?”

“Go ahead and set it down in the kitchen,” I told him, standing back up. I cringed, rubbing my back. “We should put food out for him. He’s probably hungry.”

I leaned down to open the food, and Rian shook his head.

“I got it. Go sit down.”

I heard the music cut off before footsteps started moving down the hallway.

“What the-” I heard Jack’s voice say. “Alex!”

“Yes?” I called out, looking into the hallway to see him walking down.

“What is this?” he questioned, holding out the puppy to me.

“A puppy,” I responded and he snorted.

“Obviously. You wanna explain to me why there’s suddenly a puppy running around our apartment?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“Because he needed a home.”

“You couldn’t have called me and asked first?”

“Jack, someone left him in a box outside the pet store. I couldn’t just leave him there! You know what would happen to him,” I told him and he sighed. “Look, I know you’re already mad at me, but please don’t take it out on the puppy! It’s not his fault he was abandoned. And you know me!”

“Okay, okay!” he said, sighing. “I’m not mad at you. I’m just... my back fucking hurts, I have the worst heartburn, John’s a dick, I haven’t taken a shit in like three days, my face is breaking out worse than my sophomore year of high school, and I just don’t know what to do!”

“Dude, me too,” I said, watching him crack a smile.

“I’m sorry for being a bitch,” he told me, letting the puppy down and pulling me into a hug.

“It’s fine,” I told him, squeezing him back. “And I’m sorry for throwing numerous items at your face.”

“I kind of deserved all of them.”

He pulled away from me, glancing over at Rian with a smile.

“Oh, and congrats. I’m so glad my best friend found someone good enough for him,” he said, thumping Rian on the shoulder.

“Me too,” he said, wrapping an arm around my waist and kissing my temple.

“So, what are we naming this little guy?” Jack asked, bending over to pet the puppy.

“I don’t know yet, but we’ll figure something out.”
