http://turnthepageover.livejournal.com/40047.html “Oh, listen to you, grumpy pants,” I said to Josie as I watched her fuss. She let out a loud cry, hands moving up to her face. She let out another cry, and I moved over. “Josie Rae.”
I picked her up, cradling her in my arms. I grabbed her blanket, laying it out at an angle. I laid her head at the top of one of the triangle, swaddling her in quickly before she could kick the blankets off. I picked her up again, kissing her face. She continued to fuss, snorting.
“What’s up, Jo-Jo? Are you hungry, baby?” I cooed. I got up, carrying her out into the living room. I set her down in the swing, turning it on. She began to cry a little louder, and I put the mobile down. “Shh, shh. Deedee be right back.”
I turned, going into the kitchen. I grabbed one of the bottles and the formula. I put a couple scoops into the bottle, filling it up. I heated the bottle up, trying to hurry as Josie continued to cry. I tested it on my wrist, seeing that it wasn’t too hot. I went back into the living room, lifting her out of the swing and turning it off. I sat down on the couch, cradling her and putting the bottle to her mouth. She quickly began suckling, and I kissed her forehead.
“Oh my, you were a hungry baby,” I said, watching as she stared up at me. I smiled down at her. “Hi, honey.”
I balanced the bottle with my chin, picking up the remote. I turned on the television, turning it to Spongebob.
I put my feet up on the table, yawning.
“I’m tired, Josie,” I mumbled, looking down at her. She continued to stare up at me, and I grinned. “You just like being talked to, huh?”
I adjusted her in my arms, glancing up at the clock.
“Meme and Auntie should be home soon,” I told her, wiping her mouth off with the corner of the blanket. “You’re six days old, babes. That’s almost a week.” I paused, looking down at her. “Shortest week of my life. Wow.”
She finished her bottle, and I took it out of her mouth. I set it on the table, picking up the spit-up rag and draping it over my arm. I carefully sat her up on my knee, leaning her forward and supporting her by putting my right hand to her chest. She fussed a little, but I began rubbing her back with my left hand. I patted her back and she squirmed a little against my hand.
It took a few minutes, but she finally let out a burp. I laughed, cradling her and kissing her face.
“That was a big burp for such a tiny girl,” I cooed. I leaned back on the couch, holding her to my chest, right next to my heartbeat. It was one of her favorite places to be held, and I figured it was because she remembered it from the womb. I rubbed her back gently, picking the remote back up and switching the channel. I found a Law and Order marathon, turning it on and becoming engrossed in it.
After about twenty minutes I looked down, seeing Josie was asleep in my arms. I grinned, running a finger over her round cheek. I adjusted myself, not wanting to put her down. I laid across the couch, laying her on my chest. Her small face turned to the side, laying her cheek over my heartbeat. I felt my heart tug, stroking the bright locks of her blonde hair.
I looked back to the television, running my hand over Josie’s back. My eyelids were getting heavier, and I shut them for a second.

I opened my eyes, hearing the noise of rustling bags in the kitchen. I moved to sit up, startling Josie and making her arms shoot out. She began to cry, and I quickly cuddled her, kissing her cheek gently.
“Shh, baby,” I cooed, grabbing her blanket and wrapping it around her. I stood up, feeling my abdomen ache.
I walked towards the kitchen, swaying Josie gently as I went. I looked inside, seeing May and my mom putting away groceries.
“Hey, sweetie,” Mom said, and I smiled. “Did we wake you?”
“Yeah,” I answered, leaning against the counter.
“Sorry,” she said, pausing to kiss Josie’s forehead and my cheek. “How long has she been sleeping?”
“About a half hour,” I told her. “She fell asleep after I fed her.”
“What time does Alex get home from school today?” May asked.
“Three,” I answered. “Wednesday’s are his long days.”
“Oh,” she said, and I yawned. “Do you want me to take her so you can go back to your nap?”
“Nah,” I shook my head. “I was just gonna go lay her in her bassinet since she’s asleep.”
“Okay,” May said, running her hand over the baby’s soft hair.
“What do you want for dinner, Jack?” Mom asked, and I made a face.
“What did you get?” I asked.
“I can make spaghetti, pork chops, tacos,” she listed.
“Tacos sound good,” I told her.
“Okay. I’ll make those then,” she told me, getting the ground beef out of the fridge. “Go put your baby to bed. Take a nap while you can.”
I nodded at her, adjusting Josie in my arms and carrying her into my bedroom. I moved the blanket around, laying her down in the bassinet. I pulled the blanket back up, tucking her in so she would be warm. I kissed her forehead gently, backing away and going over to my bed. I laid down, running my hands through my hair. I got underneath the covers, grabbing my phone and unlocking it. I found a text from Alex, smiling as I hit read.
From: Alexander <3
Hey, baby. I love you. Give Josie a big kiss for me. See you at 3:15.
Received: Wed September 22 1:48 pm
I hit reply, writing back before setting my phone back down on the table. I laid on my side, slipping my hand under my pillow. I shut my eyes, feeling myself start to drift into sleep.
I was quickly woken up a few minutes later when I heard a loud cry, and I sat up, rubbing my eyes.
“How did I know you were gonna do that?” I mumbled to Josie, getting up and walking to her bassinet. I looked down, seeing her eyes open and filled with angry tears. “Hey. No crying.”
I picked her up, nose automatically finding the source of the problem.
“Oh, ew.” I wrinkled my nose. “You stinky, girl.”
Josie let out a wail, and I cuddled her, carrying her to the changing pad. I laid her down, unsnapping her onesie. I pulled it up so I could undo her diaper.
“Oh god, Josie, you’re a stinky butt,” I said, grabbing the wipes. I cleaned her up, and she fussed and cried a few times. “I know you don’t like it. I’m sorry.”
I pulled a new diaper from the package, unfolding it and putting it on her.
“There. All done,” I said, smiling as I resnapped the pink onesie. I folded the diaper up, tossing it in the diaper pail. Josie whined, and I leaned down, kissing her nose. “How about some sweatpants so your little legs don’t get so cold?”
She let out a little sound, and I smiled.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” I told her, opening her drawer. I pulled out a pair of pink sweatpants, hipchecking the drawer to close it. I guided one of her legs into the pant legs, working in the other one next. I pulled them up, lifting her butt so I could get them all the way on. “There! All better!”
She made a sour face, and I frowned back at her.
“Don’t make nasty faces at me, Josie,” I said. I picked her up, putting my hand behind her head to support her neck. I kissing her gently, cuddling her. “That’s from Daddy.”
I carried her out into the living room where May was sitting on the couch. She looked over, eyes lighting up at the sight of her niece.
“Josie!” she exclaimed. “What you doing, pretty girl?”
I let May take the baby from my arms, watching her kiss her cheek. I went into the kitchen, grabbing a Coke out of the fridge. I glanced at the clock, seeing it was a few minutes after three. Alex would be home soon.
I walked back into the living room, sitting on the couch next to May. I looked down at Josie, smiling and kissing her forehead.
“How’d you make such a cute baby, Jack?” May asked, and I smiled.
“’Cause she looks like her daddy. Huh, baby?” I cooed, putting my pinky across her palm. She closed her tiny fingers over the digit, gripping onto it. “I need to cut your nails.”
“She doesn’t look completely like Alex,” May disagreed.
“She looks a hell of a lot like him. Her face shape and nose. And her cheeks,” I said.
“You had chubby cheeks, Jack,” May said, and I shook my head.
“Have you seen Alex’s baby pictures? He was a fucking chub ass!” I told her.
“She has your eyes. Big and expressive,” she told me and I nodded.
“Yeah. She does have that,” I agreed. “She resembles Alex a lot though. You can’t deny that.”
“She does,” May nodded.
I heard the door open, and I looked over to see Alex walking inside.
“Hi!” he said, smiling happily at me as he kicked off his shoes.
“Hey, gorgeous,” I grinned, watching him set his bag down and walk over to me. He kissed me lovingly and I laughed. He leaned over Josie, close enough for her eyes to focus on him.
“Hi, princess!” he exclaimed, kissing her forehead.
“You wanna go see Daddy?” May cooed to Josie.
Alex gasped, grinning at her widely. “You come see me?! Oh, my baby!”
Alex took her from May’s hands, holding her close and kissing her face. He swayed with her gently.
He sat down next to me, cradling her in one arm. He looked over at me, opening his mouth to say something, but stopped. He looked down, seeing that Josie had spit up all over his shirt.
He wrinkled his nose, looking down at the baby. He frowned, lifting her up carefully.
I couldn’t help but laugh, and I watched him crack a small smile.
“Yeah, I agree. I needed to change my shirt. It’s not very cute,” he told Josie, setting her in my arms. He peeled off his shirt, careful not to get any of the spit up in his hair. He wiped Josie’s mouth off with the sleeve before taking her back in his arms. “Okay. All better.”
