“Come on, baby. Waddle, waddle a little faster,” Alex teased, opening the door for me.

“Shut the fuck up,” I hissed, glaring. I took a deep breath, trying to get the oxygen back into my lungs. I was so short of breath lately.

We walked up to the desk, and he wrapped an arm around me, allowing me to lean against him. The receptionist looked up at us, smiling.

“Hello,” she said.

“Hi. We have an appointment for Barakat,” I answered. I felt eyes on me, but I ignored it. It happened any time I was in a public place.

“Okay,” she said after she was done typing something into the computer. “Please have a seat, and we’ll come get you when the doctor is ready.”

“Alright, thank you,” I said, turning around to enter the waiting room. We moved towards a chair, and Alex held my hand, helping me ease down into it. “I’m so pregnant,” I groaned. “It’s ridiculous.

Alex chuckled, continuing to hold my hand tightly. I smiled at him, closing my tired eyes. Between the leg cramps, the heartburn, and the need to get up every hour to pee, I had probably only slept four or five hours last night. I put my hand on my stomach, rubbing the aching skin. Alex looked down then glanced back up at my face.

“She moving a lot?” he asked, rubbing my stomach.

“No, she’s sleeping. Everything else just aches,” I told him, and he frowned, stroking his thumb over my knuckles.

“I’m sorry, baby,” he said.

“Good. It’s all your fucking fault,” I told him and he laughed.

“Barakat,” a nurse called out and I tried to stand up. Alex held my hand, helping me out of the chair. We followed the nurse back to one of the examining rooms.

“Ow,” I mumbled. “I think she just elbowed me in the freaking kidney.”

Alex laughed, leaning forward to rub my stomach. I felt a kick and a punch, and I grimaced.

“Josie,” I mumbled. “I know it’s cramped in there, babe, but cut me a break. That hurts.”

“Princess. Stop kicking daddy,” Alex said, and I felt a rather hard kick.

“Ow,” I whined. “Don’t talk to her. She fucking loves you,” I told him and he laughed.

The door opened and my doctor came inside. I returned her smile, sitting up a little more.

“How’s our little angel?” she asked, grabbing a pair of gloves.

“Violent,” I responded, and she laughed.

“I think energetic is what you mean,” she said, and I cocked an eyebrow.

“I don’t know. You haven’t felt this child kick,” I told her, and she laughed.

“Well that’s a good thing! That means she’s healthy and developing correctly,” she told me, feeling around my stomach.

“Do you need a urine sample?” I asked, and she nodded.

“Well, yes,” she answered.

“Okay, because I really have to pee and I figured now would be a good time to fill that cup up,” I told her, and she laughed.

“Of course,” she said, turning around to get a cup for me. She gave it to me, and I got up slowly before leaving the room to go into the bathroom. I returned a few minutes later, giving her the cup before laying back on the chair. “Alright. You ready to check on little Josie?”

“Yes,” I said, reaching for Alex’s hand. I grinned at him, squeezing his hand.

“Week thirty-one,” he said, and I smiled.

We waited patiently for her to get the screen up. She grabbed the gel, squirting it onto my stomach. I made a face as the cold liquid was smeared across my skin as she moved the wand around.

We watched her shape form on the screen, and Alex squeezed my hand. I looked up into his smiling face, feeling my heart swell.

“Hey, Josie,” I said, watching her squirm on the screen. I could see her feet move as she kicked, and I smiled. “She looks like you.”

“Shut up,” Alex said, looking at the screen. “You can’t even see her face.”

“I doesn’t matter. Her face is shaped like yours,” I told him. “I wonder if she’ll be blonde.”

“She’s got a head full of hair,” the doctor said, and I looked over at her.

“Really?”

“Yes,” she answered, nodding.

“We need to get her pretties for her hair,” I told Alex, and he laughed, leaning over to kiss me.

“Okay. We’ll go buy her pretties after we leave here,” he answered, and I smiled. “She definitely likes to suck her thumb.”

“I know. I think she’s been sucking on it the last two ultrasounds we’ve had done,” I said, laughing.

“There’s one of her little feet,” the doctor pointed out, and I grinned.

“Aw, baby! Look at her little feet! They’re so tiny!” I cooed, hearing Alex laugh. “Our baby!”

“Our baby!” he said, smiling.

I rubbed my arm, feeling the medical tape that was holding the gauze down against my arm. The doctor had taken yet another round of blood for testing, and I could already feel my arm beginning to bruise.

“Arm hurt?” Alex asked as we sat in the doctor’s office, waiting for her to come in.

“Yeah,” I frowned, and he squeezed my hand. “I’m gonna be so happy when they can finally stop poking me with needles all the damn time.”

“Yeah. It’s not fun,” he agreed.

The door opened, and the doctor walked in with her clipboard. She went around to her chair, moving the computer mouse to awaken the desktop.

“Okay. I wanted to discuss your surgery with you,” she told me.

“My surgery?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes. You’ll need to have a Cesarean section in order to get the baby out,” she explained.

“Unless you plan on pushing her out of your urethra,” Alex told me, and I cringed.

“Ow. Ew, no,” I said, shaking my head. He laughed, and the doctor smiled.

“So I wanted to schedule you for thirty-eight weeks. It will be a little over a week before your due date,” she told me.

“She’ll be all ready, right?” I asked, and she nodded.

“Yes, she’ll be ready,” she assured me.

“Okay. So what day are you thinking?” I asked, seeing her take out her calendar.

“September 16,” she answered, and I glanced over at Alex.

“What day of the week is that?” I asked her.

“A Thursday,” she responded.

“Will that work?” I asked Alex. “Do you have class that day?”

“I have class Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday,” he told me. “So yeah, that’ll work out.”

“Great. So we’ll schedule for your precious baby girl to be here September 16,” she said. “Mark your calendars.”

“That’s right between our dates,” Alex told me, and I laughed.

“14, 16, 18,” I answered, smiling and kissing him.

“Okay. We have all that done. Any questions before I let you guys go?” she asked.

“Not that I can think of,” I said, shaking my head. I looked over at Alex. “You good?”

“Yeah,” he answered.

“Alrighty. I’ll see you guys in two weeks,” she said, standing up.

“See you then,” I said, standing up slowly. Alex grabbed my hands to help steady me.
