“Jack, when do you plan on going to take your driver’s test?” my mom asked as she prepared some sandwiches.

“I don’t know. Next week maybe,” I told her.

“That’s what you’ve been saying since your birthday, and that was two weeks ago,” Alex said, and I sighed.

“I’ll do it when I feel like it, okay? Don’t rush me,” I told him.

“I’m not rushing you. I just want you to be aware you only have about two months left if you wanna get your license before Josie’s born,” he said.

“Thank you, I wasn’t aware of that,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Boys,” my mom said, sensing the tension in both of our voices. “Alex, maybe it would help Jack feel more comfortable taking the test if he had a little more practice. Why don’t you take him out for a drive?”

He looked over at me and I shrugged.

“Whatever,” I said, itching my stomach. The gradual stretching of my skin constantly made it itch like crazy.

“Okay. We’ll go in a little bit,” Alex said, watching me itch. “Come on.”

“What?” I asked as he took my hand, leading me upstairs.

“I was gonna get the cocoa butter for you,” he answered, letting me sit down on the bed. I laid back on the bed, watching him search for the bottle on our dresser. “Why is this thing such a fucking mess?”

“’Cause no one ever cleans it,” I told him, watching a few things fall to the floor. He found the bottle, carrying it over to the bed with him. He opened it, pouring some into his hand. I pulled up my shirt, letting him rub the lotion onto my bump.

“I can’t believe you’re going to be seven months in two days,” he told me.

“We can hold our daughter in just two months,” I told him, smiling.

“That’s crazy to think about,” he said.

“Are you scared?” I asked, and he shrugged.

“I’m not scared, no… I’m just kind of nervous, I guess,” he told me, closing the lid of the bottle and laying down next to me. “Nervous that I’m not gonna be good enough or I’m gonna do something wrong.”

“I don’t think there’s anything that we can really do to fuck up raising a child. I think as long as we both love her and care for her, that everything is going to turn out okay,” I told him.

“Let’s take a nap and then we can go for a ride,” Alex said, wrapping his arms around me.

“Boo,” I said, making him laugh.

“You ready?” Alex asked, pulling into a parking lot.

“No,” I answered, sighing as he opened his door and got out. I unbuckled my seatbelt, getting out of the car. We switched sides, and I climbed into the driver’s seat. I buckled my seatbelt, waiting for Alex to situate himself in his own seat.

“Okay,” Alex said, looking over at me. I turned the key, allowing the engine to come to life. I checked the mirrors, seeing they were perfect for me. I pressed my foot down on the brake, shifting the car into drive. I slowly lifted my foot off the brake, feeling the car slowly coast forward. I exhaled, turning the wheel and pulling out of the parking spot. I pressed down on the accelerator, driving towards the road. “If it makes you more comfortable to drive around the parking lot first, go ahead.”

“I’m fine,” I said, turning on my right turning signal as I waited for the traffic to pass. When there was a break between cars, I pulled out, accelerating to match the speed of the traffic. “Where are we going?”

“I don’t know. Wherever you want,” he answered, and I rolled my eyes.

“I’ll drive better with a destination,” I told him, not even trying to hide my annoyance.

“Knock it off, Jack,” he stated, glaring at me. “Drive to Dairy Queen. Maybe that will cool your fucking attitude.”

I rolled my eyes again, beginning to accelerate as the speed limit increased.

“Slow down,” Alex mumbled, glancing down at the speedometer.

“I’m going the speed limit,” I told him.

“How fast are you going?” he asked.

“Thirty-five,” I answered, glancing down at my speedometer to check. I tapped my brakes lightly to slow down, realizing I had actually been going about thirty-eight or thirty-nine miles per hour.

“Right, because you just slowed down,” Alex pointed out, and I gritted my teeth.

“I was going, like, three over, Alex,” I said. “It’s not that big of a deal.”

“It’s not a big deal until the cops pull your over, right?”

“I was going three over!”

“It’s still speeding!”

“Alright! Just shut up!” I exclaimed, gripping the wheel tightly.

He grew quiet and I tried to calm down, taking deep breaths through my nose.

“You’re gonna wanna turn here,” Alex spoke up calmly, and I nodded.

“Thanks,” I mumbled, flipping on my left turning signal. I slowed down gradually, seeing there was a car coming from the opposite direction. I knew I could make it if I moved quickly, so I twisted my wheel and stepped on the gas. The car jerked forward, turning a little too rapidly.

“Slow the fuck down! What are you doing?!” Alex yelled, and I noticed he had slid slightly in his seat.

“Turning,” I answered bluntly.

“That was way too fast for a fucking turn, Jack!” he exclaimed.

“Since when did you become my fucking dad, Alex?!” I demanded, straightening the car out after another turn.

“Since I didn’t want to die!” he yelled. “Do you plan on driving like that when Josie’s in the backseat?”

“Of course not,” I said.

“Then drive like you would if she was in the car,” he said. “Technically she already is!”

“Will you just shut up?!” I demanded, glancing over at him. He looked straight out of the windshield.

“You just ran a stop sign,” he told me, and I squeezed the steering wheel tightly again.

“Maybe if you would stop fucking yelling at me I could focus more!” I told him, looking over at him again.

“Keep your eyes on the road,” he told me, and I glared. I looked back at the road, seeing I was headed in the direction of a tree along the side of the road. I swerved, jerking my steering wheel to the left and quickly began trying to straighten the car out. Alex jerked sideways, seatbelt locking to hold him in place.

“Pull over,” he demanded, but I kept driving. “I’m serious, Jack! Pull over and get out of my fucking car!”

“Alex-”

“Pull over!”

I felt my hands shake as I pulled over to the side of the road, anger bubbling up inside of me. Alex got out of the car, slamming the door and beginning to walk over to my side. I got out of the car also, walking the opposite way around it. Alex got in the car just as I did. We buckled out seatbelts, and Alex turned on the car, shifting it into drive. He turned his head, checking his blind spots before pulling out onto the road.

He was quiet as he drove, but I knew it was because he was biting his tongue.

“You made me nervous,” I tried to clarify, but he snorted.

“You made me pretty nervous too,” he answered.

I gritted my teeth, unsure of what to say. I didn’t particularly want to fight, but he was making it so easy to.

“If you hadn’t ben yelling at me, I wouldn’t have done so badly,” I told him.

“I’m not in the mood to discuss this right now, Jack,” he told me.

“I’m just trying-”

“Jack, shut up!” he said and my eyes widened.

“Don’t fucking tell me to shut up!” I said. “You started this!”

“Jack, from the moment you woke up this morning all you have done is bitch. I’m sorry you’re having a shit day for absolutely no reason, but you didn’t have to fucking ruin mine. Everything I say to you, you turn into an argument. I’m done. Just stop fucking talking to me,” he said, and I glared.

“I was talking about twenty minutes ago when you were yelling at me. You started yelling at me over nothing!” I told him.

“Jack, I said shut up! Just shut up! Don’t you know how to fucking do that?!” he demanded, slamming his hand on the steering wheel. He looked over at me and I glared at him. I dug my nails into my leg, resisting the urge to hit him right in the mouth.

“Fuck you,” I said, shaking my head.

I turned my head, looking out of my window and ignoring Alex.

The next thing I heard were screeching tires and the loud, sharp crunch of metal.
