Serena would never have denied that she'd enjoyed being little again, but only for a brief while. Waking up as herself again had been more than a slight relief. As pleased as she was the candy had stuck around, it was just one more day in her life that she would be content to pretend had never happened ( Read more... )

"Really? Because last time I checked, Jenny was telling me I hadn't actually grown much between ten and seventeen," Dan put down the book he was glancing through, not really captivated by it, anyway. "That might just be her usual sort of sisterly teasing, I never can tell."

"And you, I mean, I never pictured you being quite so small. Except in pictures, of course. Seeing it was an entirely different matter. Still have any urges to go for a swing?"

Serena bit her lip, smiling as she leaned back against the bookshelf. "Only if someone wanted to push me," she said, and the coy tone was entirely beyond her control, more habit than anything else. "I guess I wasn't really in a place to judge anyone's height, was I? I'm so, so glad to be back like this again." She'd never before been through one of the island's freaky things firsthand, so she guessed she was just lucky it had lasted only a day and not a whole weekend like when Blair had been a man.

"Me too. Have I mentioned how weird it was to have an older sister?" It was a sentiment that Serena probably shared, seeing as Eric had towered over her as well. "It's a good thing it only lasted a day, or I might have seen a bit more revenge for the teasing she had to endure as a kid."

"Somehow I doubt Jenny was the only one getting teased back then." Serena grinned, then shook her head. "I always knew Eric was more mature than me, but having him actually be older is more than I can handle for very long. Speaking of, how is Jenny? I heard she stayed with my brother a while - is everything okay? I thought the new place was almost done."

"It's done," he coughed, covering his hand with his mouth to buy himself a couple of seconds as he recovered. "Sorry, something in my throat. Anyway, I think she decided she couldn't live without air-conditioning, even if the idea of her that close to Chuck is disturbing, well, I'm sure Eric will protect her honour."

Things he wasn't going to go into: the real reasons Jenny didn't want to move in with him. Especially not with Serena of all people. "Anyway, Eric's a good kid. I sure he only gloated for a short while. Ten minutes, maybe a half hour."

Serena reached out to rest a hand on his back, head tipping to the side as she looked at him with some concern. He seemed to recover just fine, though, so she straightened up and leaned back again. "He is a good kid," she said. "Jenny's safe with him around. But even good kids are human and I think it would have taken a saint not to tease me when I was somewhere around three feet tall."

"And I'd venture a guess that neither of our siblings are up for sainthood," he knew that he sure wasn't, still a bit disturbed by Serena's question and trying to not show it. "Seeing Chuck in that costume made it all worth it for me."

"We're hardly saints ourselves," Serena reminded him. She was trying hard to be, though, or at least to be good. There were some things saints didn't do that she wouldn't have relinquished, that dubious honor in the afterlife not being worth the guarantee of certain pleasures now. She folded her arms and glanced away, grinning. "Chuck's was... fitting. If anyone around here's least likely to be canonized..."

"But if that was supposed to be the Big Bad Wolf," he chuckled, his voice low. It was likely best to not comment on the two of them being saints. After all, in her mind they'd never slept together. "I mean, I don't think he could have scared a piglet, and I've seen a few of those running around."

"Oh, I hope he wouldn't," she said, shaking her head. "I've met one of those piglets and he was a sweet little thing. I don't want Chuck scaring Pigby." It seemed like everyone but them had pets these days. She was a little jealous, though she supposed she had her hands full enough as it was.

"...Pigby? Seriously?" Dan raised an eyebrow as he tried to not laugh. "Someone has a piglet named Pigby?"

"It's a thing," Serena said, waving a hand and shaking her head. "The dog is Digby, the pig is Pigby. I think it's adorable." Any trace of defensiveness, though, was lost in a little laugh.

"Digby and Pigby," his tone was disbelieving, his eyes wide. "Alright. I'll have to take your word on this one. It's seems like a strange sort of thing."

"Blair would kill me if I had a pet," Serena mused, "let alone a pig. I wouldn't mind a puppy, though, you know?" She turned, head leaning against the shelf still, reaching to trace the back of her hand over the spines of the books. The Age of Innocence. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The Beautiful and the Damned. Vanity Fair. It was always out to get her, but at least some of the great literature of the last two centuries had been about the vices of the rich.

"How about a monkey? I mean, how could Blair complain about a monkey?" Dan stops, eyes scanning the shelves from a distance, his mouth hitching into a smile when he sees the titles. "How would someone even catch a monkey?"

Serena giggled. "I'd like to see someone try." If nothing else, it would have been funny. She hooked a finger on one of the books, tipping it down and toward her. "I always liked Hemingway better than Fitzgerald," she said. "The shelf doesn't always cooperate."
