101: Morgaine LeFay guide!

Dec 13, 2012 22:41

This was a request from theotherayn (OMG WHY?!)
And, just to state this: I'm going in order for the guides/tutorials, so expect them as they were requested. Right now my icon muse is quite dead so I'm not sure WHEN your icons will come around, but be sure they will!
ANYWAY!

//

Forigive in advance the terrible english and hope this guide will be helpful!
My bases were these.

//

As usual I start with a 100*100px black canvas (I'm used to it,but you can just leave it white or whatever is best for you!)
I've pasted my Morgaine base and went for a center crop (you don't say!) and then, copypasted the blindfold on the image, this is what it looks like without the mask:

Okay, as you may notice my images have poor colours, I didn't want to adjust them before having a ~solid base, so I just cleaned the blindfold and went on working. This anyway, is what it looks like with the masked-clean blindfold!

Since this is my base, I've copied it with ctrl+shift+c and pasted it over one time on:
multiply 100% fill » screen 100% fill » screen 100% fill » softlight 100% fill

Okay, obviously the last one is going to be our real base, so, as I usually do, I made a copy (ctrl+shift+c) and pasted it on top.

Now the fun part, I've starte with the background, I've used the eyedropper tool to pick a nice shade of light blue (#accde1) and then I painted the left side of my icon using a solid round brush. (I've used something around 19px for the bigger zones and a 5px brush for the tiny parts) this is what it looks like (BRR!)

With the same colour and a soft rounded brush (30px? Something like that) I've painted a stripe over her face (I've used a bit of gaussian blur -radius4- to blur it up a bit) and then I set this layer on screen at 28% fill.

»

Now the same exact story goes for the orangish part on the right (#e2ac5c) except that the screen layer here is set at 53% fill!

At this point I just used a curve layer on normal to light up the picture, my points:

and what it looks like after

Now, since I do love vibrant colour I've added a vibrance layer with these numbers:
vibrance +100
you could use the hue/saturation tool too, it's not that different!

AND NOW MY FAVOURITE PAAAAAAAART!
LIGHT BLOBS!
I use some default brush of pscs4 to make lines like these

I use a lot of gaussian blur because I like soft light, anyway, this layer goes to softlight at 100% fill

Do the same with some black stripes, so you'll have some nice shadows, but set this black layer on overlay instead of soflight!

»

And this is the moment where I painted (gosh I know most of you hate my way of painting stuff! XD) the hair, and some lines on her face. The colour I've used are from both the backgrounds. Then I've added more black lines both on the left side of her face and over the hair on the right (moviment!)

»

Now, since I think it's a bit off, I've added some colour on the bottom left and top right side of my icon, I've used a deep purple for the bottom and a deep red for the top.

The colour blobs are on two different layers, the purple one is set on colour burn at 100% fill, the red one on softlight at 66% fill.

At this point, I don't even know why, I've used a green gradient map (left #244410, right #70ce57) and I've set it on softlight at 100% fill.

»

and just because I am crazy, I've used a colour balance layer with these numbers:
MIDTONES: 41/ -12/ 62
SHADOWS: -40/29/10

the black was too deep so I've picked this texture from midnight_road

and I set it on screen at 100% fill.

As I said, I do love vibrant colour, so I pimped them up a bit with another vibrance layer with vibrance at +78!

Now, tbh, I've used the "offset" filter from ps, because it's nice and I wanted it to be a bit off, anyway, you can decide if you want to use it or not (USE IT! Or at least try it!) and then, after the offset filter I've painted some white bits in a few point just because.

DONE!
Oh God, how many mistakes I made? #let'snotcountthemplease!
If you've any questions about this guide feel free to ask! The other will come soon(ish) enough!
