Last night I dreamt of flak and thunder
The place of my birth was rent asunder
With a faerie in tow, mother by her side
We ran through the 'burbs for a place to hide
A roof ablaze flashed in and out of view
With rising smoke the darkest of hue
Nowhere to run from the whistles and ash
Duck left, right now, avoiding the crash
Of concrete eruptions that come from below
And the smoke that ensues; a tarnished grey snow
It falls on us all as we search around
Unable to find a safe place in this town
And low, there arises the sense deep in me
That the time has come to take her and flee
We dodge again, avoiding the spray
Of rocks and dust; blocking all light of day
What’s next? The sound of impending doom
Her mother stands frozen, and closer it looms
"Get down! Behind the Wall! Cover your Head!"
By the time we get up, we know she is dead
In place of the alley is a crater and soot
And a small red shoe that once cradled a foot
I grabbed her small wrists and gave her a shove
Before the bits of her mother rained from above
The gore was real, yet more real were the sounds
The kind that thump; meat falling on the ground
Dear god, will someone please give me a shake
From this vision I fear, I’m powerless to wake.
