When the code pager goes off, one of course abandons whatever one is doing and takes off at a run. And so it is a med person rite of passage to have just bought lunch (or dinner, or whatnot), get the code alarm, and have to abandon their uneaten food.
I actually managed to get through my whole third and fourth years of medical school -- including stints on the hospital-wide code teams for Mott and University, PICU, ER trauma, and Transplant flight call -- and all the way to the very last day on-call for neonatal resuscitation here at Wash U without losing a meal. Until today.
Well, the cashier downstairs was suitably amused when I came back for the 2nd time in twenty minutes to buy the exact same lunch. :-)
