LJ-Cut:

"Here she comes! Hurry up! Come on!" Melissa was on an upside-down bucket peering over her tall, wooden fence from her backyard, waving her hand frantically as if it would have gotten me there faster. She was one of the first friends I met when I moved to Evergreen Park. She told me these eccentric stories of one of Evergreen Park's famous inhabitants: The Finger Lady.

I peered over the fence, eagerly looking for this person I thought was something conjured from Melissa's imagination. As my doubts were multiplying a lady in old baggy jeans and a flannel sweatshirt crossed the street.

"Everyday she walks by, I told you I wasn't lying!" Melissa said in a told-you-so tone. She walked down the streets of Evergreen Park in the spring, summer and autumn walking her little white dog. While she walked the little ball of fluff she held up the pointer finger of her right hand and talked to it like it was a companion. Sometimes it talked back.

At times she would scream profanities at it, sometimes she would cry to it and sometimes she would tell it stories. Once Melissa and I tried to gather up enough courage walking home from school one day and greeted her with a smile. We ended up running away after she called us the Spawns of Satan. Apparently she was having a bad day.
