Apparently you can play as the PSP2 characters in Valkyria Chronicles II...but I don't think you can unlock them until much later in the game (or pay extra money and download them as DLC? I'm not too sure about that...). It's a REALLY good game though. Just...long. I got sidetracked a little ways into it. If you had a PS3 we could play coop multiplayer via adhoc party...but...yeah ;_;
I wouldn't really call it grindy. Grinding implies just mindlessly going through battles over and over. There are tons of optional levels and each battle actually requires thought and planning.
Do the battles have character scenes? I like those. I played all the extra challenge missions from Laurette in the cafe on Phantasy Star Portable 2 for the little bonus scenes. I like the character designs in VC so I hope they are developed along with the story.
I haven't been putting much strategy into anything so far, though I'm only at the beginning. It's more like... run to the enemies and kill them, repeat with the next character, take cover and heal as needed. XD Haven't been paying much attention to the character types, though I must say, MR. silver hair is rather inconvenient being so short range... but he's cute so I'm keeping him way way... I haven't picked a favorite yet, I just assembled the bishounen in a team.

I heard Emilia is in the game, not sure who else. I don't know how to unlock her, I guess I'll find out later XD
