OK. Its official now……I have serious vardo envy. Pathetic isn’t it? For those of you outside the .00000001% who know WTF a vardo is, it’s a wagon, usually pulled by one or more horses like an archaic mobile home, except smaller. Sometimes they were square in shape, or had a rounded roof or looked like a barrel on wheels. Regardless, they were favored by sheepherders, tinkers, the “Travelling Folk”, also known as gypsies or the Rom. This is what the real ones looked like. Mine will be the Econo-car version!!!!!! Welcome to my mid-life crisis....... ; P
And because of the internet connectiveness and a shared hatred /laziness concerning the extensive teardown/setup of an encampment in the SCA, a small group started converting those small trailers at Lowes, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, Tractor Supply Center, etc. into highway speed worthy modern equivalents….Me, I just want a fast, self contained “cabin” for SCA events that is lightweight and self-contained when I’m being my usual mundane self.
Yeah, I’m that lazy. Currently, I have a 4x8’ harbor Freight trailer. This February I’m upgrading the wheels and axle for highway speeds but in the meantime, the trailer gives me the towing capacity of my old Jeep Commanche truck with the intrinsic comfort of my Saturn Ion Coupe. Not to mention that I can park the trailer and have the great gas mileage the other 355 days of the year.
Mine is going to be collapsible, like a barrel on wheels when its up. A queen sized bed laid across the width. A tarp over top for two sunshades during the event one on each side. Maybe we can merchant out of one side and relax on the other? I’m looking at easily packable stock to go with Laura’s apothecary shop. Lightweight and easily transportable. Something I can back into the garage when not on the road….. one more definite step towards preparing for retirement in 16 short years. November 7, 2008 is the first tipping day on the other side of the apex…..not much time!
