today was such a sunday.
and rosa parks died.
and have been thinking. I mean i'm not a big anything activist. but i've been thinking.
about how when you're little people tell you that abraham lincoln freed the slaves and thomas jefferson wrote the declaration of independence and said the whole thing about dissent and the thing about newspapers...and george washington refused to be a king because he didn't think one man should be allowed to rule another that way.
then you find out that abraham lincoln wasn't an abolitionist, that thomas jefferson turned into a hypocrite once he got into office because he figured out the real world couldn't tolerate his ideas, which is sad really, and that the man who wouldn't be king owned slaves.
but when you get to highschool the whole rosa parks story doesn't change.
it's just a little woman. who didn't want to get out of her seat.
and the story doesn't change.
and that's the most important thing about it, i think.
that it doesn't have to be sugar-coated.
that the sugar-coated story is the real story.
and that's sort of goddamn beautiful.
