So I was thinking about how I, well, think the other day... and I think I've figured out why I suck at speaking sometimes - uh... most of the time. I've noticed that I primarily think in images. In order to communicate thoughts I have to then translate those images into words and coherent sentences. This process is not as simple as it sounds. Before those images become standardized English (in most situations) they are translated into a jumble of words in the three languages I know best: English, Latin, and Russian (soon to by Hebrew. Yay. More confusion). The problem with this is that both Latin and Russian are "non-word-order" languages. So the resulting sentence may not be in the correct order for the translation to English.
A simple example my illustrate this better:
1. Say, the image of a dog jumping over a ditch and killing a rabbit pops into my mind. That image then becomes...
2. "Sobaka over fossa jumps et lepum necat." which would then become...
3. "Dog over ditch jumps and rabbit kills." is then re-ordered to
4. "The dog jumps over the ditch and kills the rabbit."
Ta da!
So, many times my mind doesn't quite get though step 3 before I speak and what I say doesn't make any sense to other people the first time I say it. But if they ask me to repeat it I can then say it much more easily. This is also problem with writing papers if I'm not in the correct mindset. I can sit there and know what to write but won't be able to actually put it to words.
Good fun, my mind is.
