The Merritt Parkway Prayer
(c) 2010 Laurie Tupper

Lord if I am to die today, upon this lonesome road
Send down your angels unto me and with them I will go
But if they're not already come, and if it is not too late
O Lord, don't let them take me from this God-forsaken state

(chorus) Lord, don't let me die in Connecticut, when I am raised on high
It's no fit place to live in and it's no fit place to die
I know I am a sinner Lord, but this one prayer I pray:
Don't let me die in Connecticut, if I must die today

It's a long long way between New York and the Massachusetts line
And I'll watch along the highway just to see that heavenly sign
But Lord please wait 'til I'm out of state, if you don't mind refrainin':
With the traffic on the Merritt I might never get to Canaan

So set your angels 'round me Lord as I am southward bound
Through that great morass of EZ-Pass with danger all around
For when I hear that heavenly call, I want to be prepared--
Just wait 'til I get to Jersey, Lord, I'll be glad to be out of there
