Mingling hands and mingling glances

I think my first best friends are from Washington County. I had friends when I lived in Old Town, but I don't remember them all that well so I am going to start with Sophie and Kailee.

Sophie and Kailee were my best friends when I was in kindergarten and first grade. We were butterflies in the school play. Kailee's father was a park ranger so we played in Cobscook Bay State Park and called it the 100 Acre Woods. I can still remember the dozens of stories we made up.

Kailee ended up going to Clarkson for a year before transferring to the University of Maine Machias. She is a math teacher and is now pregnant with her second daughter. Her older daughter is the most adorable baby I have ever seen.

Sophie went to Bryn Mawr and learned Arabic, traveled all over the world, and is currently living at home. She spent a year in the Peace Corp in Somaliland and spent a year in Peru. She is unbearably cool.

I really lost touch with them after about fifth grade. Sophie's freshman roommate was a friend of mine from middle school and through the wonders of Facebook, I got back in touch with them.

The title is from the poem The Stolen Child.
