A question of grammar

Okay, i have a phrase for you all.

"She was sat on the floor."

What's the deal with this? I'd never heard it in my life until about two weeks ago, and suddently i'm reading it everywhere. Is it a British thing, or what? Cause i look at it and go 'that's WRONG!' 'was sat' is not acceptable English in my book. Am i missing something?

ETA: Okay, i ought to amend. I know it's correct if it's being used to mean that someone has sat her on the floor. HOWEVER, in the contexts i've seen, it's being used to mean 'she was sitting on the floor'. To give a hypothetical context for it: "He watched her from the doorway for a few moments before he entered the room. She was sat upon the floor painting her toenails."
