For many years Tsunayoshi Sawda, simply known as Tsuna, has been called "No Good Tsuna" at school. Being clumsy, bad at sports, and even worse with schoolwork, it's no surprise he's called that. Of course, all this changes when Tsuna's mother finds an ad for a home tutor. The home tutor turns out to be a mysterious baby named Reborn who is actually hitman from Italy that is supposed to make Tsuna the 10th generation mafia boss for the Vongola. Tsuna immediately objects to this, but it turns out that Reborn wasn't allowed to go home until Tsuna's grades goes up.
Along the way of Tsuna's mafia boss training, Tsuna frequently gets shot by Reborn's Dying Will Bullet, a bullet that instead of killing him sends him into his Dying Will Mode. In this mode he has an orange flame on his forehead and he's practically naked (only wearing his boxers), but whatever he regretted not doing while he was shot, he will now do with a dying will. This form can only stay for 5 minutes, though.
Much after Tsuna got used to his noisy life, real trouble finally appears. Students from a nearby town called Kokuyo shows up, defeating students from Namimori. It turns out that these particular students were affiliated with the mafia and the leader of the group was a wanted criminal. When it was Tsuna's turn to fight, Reborn has run out of Dying Will Bullets, making it impossible for Tsuna to win the fight. Fortunately, two new items appeared right when the final blow was about to be performed. The Rebuke Bullet, one of the new items, was shot at Tsuna which allowed him to enter Hyper Dying Will Mode and for him to use his new X-Gloves. With his new power, he was able to defeat the Kokuyo Gang.
Just when he thought all the big battles were over, an assassination squad from the Vongola family was out to get the special Vongola rings. Even though they were part of the Vongola, the rings can only be given to the successor of the Vongola so it was Tsuna's duty to battle the squad and rightfully obtain the rings as his own. In the end, Tsuna fights the leader of the squad in his Hyper Dying Will Form. With the help of some previous training, he was able to keep the form for longer than 5 minutes and was able to defeat him.
