The Galaxy in Your Eyes

Why do people wish on shooting stars,
even though they disappear far out in space?

The bright full moon was already shining proudly above their heads when Hidari Shoutarou and Philip finished their work of the day. It was a small case, but because of Shoutarou's half-boiledness, it got complicated in the middle of the way and Philip had to lend a hand, as usual. Somehow the case was done and both could finally go home.

When Philip suddenly stopped walking and looked up to the sky, Shoutarou, curious, did the same. It was when he realized the one catching the younger boy's attention was a star, a shining star that was shifting rapidly towards the Earth. Shoutarou let out a small "ah!" before he took off his fedora, placed it on his chest, closed his eyes and looked down while whispering something under his breath.

The wish that you murmured beneath the night sky,
I wonder if it's a fleeting one?

"Were you making a wish?" Philip asked when Shoutarou put on his hat again.

"Huh? Yeah. Why didn't you?" he asked back as he started walking, Philip tailing him behind.

"I did a research on that, but there's no proof that wishing upon a star would make it come true," he replied casually. "Besides, I don't have anything to wish for."

Shoutarou looked shocked. "Nothing? Nothing at all? But there should be something! Like, a new gadget, or something..."

"I don't wish for it that much," Philip, for some reason, chuckled. "What did you wish for, anyway?"

"Ah, me? I wish Akiko would be less annoying," the detective let out a small snicker. He then placed his hand on his fedora, as if trying to hide his face from the younger boy with his arms. "That, and something else..." he added, whispering embarrassedly.

Philip turned his head to Shoutarou. "Hm? What was that?"

"No-nothing!" the elder responded quickly as he cursed the moon for shining so bright, making it hard for him to hide his scarlet-colored cheeks.

The two fell into what seemed to be an endless silence, as they felt a soft breeze blowing, through their shirts, into their skins, and into their bones, chilling.

We collected all of the pulses in the wind,
they tasted like peppermint and tears.

"Ah!" Philip cried out as he suddenly felt his body falling towards the ground, landing perfectly on his right knee and hand.

"Oi, what are you doing? It's not like you to be tripping down like that," Shoutarou shook his head. "Are you okay?" he then asked, offering his hand to help. Philip smiled awkwardly as he took the hand.

"Yeah. Thanks."

They seem to disappear;
You grasped my hand.

"Seriously, be careful next time. Were you thinking about something new again? You should start to watch things around you, you know."

"I wasn't thinking about anything," Philip defended himself. "I wasn't... thinking about anything."

Shoutarou raised an eyebrow. "You know, you're acting really weird tonight. Well, you're actually weird to begin with, but tonight you're kind of... different."

"Hey, Shoutarou, I wonder why sometimes time can fly so fast, but sometimes it feels like forever?" Philip, not paying attention to Shoutarou's comment, asked as he stared blankly into the air.

"Huh?" Shoutarou turned his head to the younger boy, puzzled. "You lost me."

"Nothing. It's just that I've been wondering about that, but have yet to find the answer. I researched it from many fields, from Physics to Philosophy, but I haven't found anything satisfying."

"Hmm. Interesting," Shoutarou placed a finger on his chin. "I think it's different for each person."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean," Shoutarou scratched the back of his head, trying to come up with an explanation. "Well, for example, when you're with someone you hate, it seems like the Earth is moving veeeery slowly. Like, when I'm with Terui." Philip laughed a bit at the last sentence.

"Somehow, just somehow, I understand that."

"Then," Shoutarou continued. "When you're with someone you like, time feels to pass by very fast. LIke when I'm..." he stopped talking for a moment, realizing what he almost said.

"'Like when you're... what?"

"W-well, yeah. So that's it I guess. When you're with someone you like, time really flies," Shoutarou replied uneasily.

"Hmm..."

Eternity isn't something real.

"But tonight's sky, it's really bright, isn't it? Full moon, a lot of stars, and no clouds..." Shoutarou said, gazing at the countless stars above them.

Philip looked up to the sky again, and his lips formed a small smile. "You're right."

Even if you're lost in the galaxy,
I'll search as far as it takes, for that small light.

"Hey, Shoutarou," Philip called.

"What is it, Philip?"

And I'll become a constellation next to you.

"We're partners, right?"

Shoutarou looked a bit surprised, then he chuckled. "Of course! Why would you ask something like that?"

Philip ignored the last remark, as he turned his head, and his eyes met Shoutarou's gaze.

"We're going to be together forever, right?"

Shoutarou blinked his eyes, didn't know how to react. He wanted to escape Philip's stare, but it was like the younger boy locked Shoutarou's eyes to his. For some reason, Philip's eyes were filled with endless emotions -- worry, longing, anger, sadness, fear and who knew what else -- and Shoutarou couldn't pick which one his main feeling was, nor could he respond to that question.

"We're going to be together forever... right?"

Philip's voice was trembling as he repeated the sentence, and upon hearing that, Shoutarou's hesitation vanished elsewhere as he smiled, still looking directly to Philip's eyes.

"Of course. Of course we are, partner."

I want to gaze into your galaxy eyes,
forever.

period.
