I very unexpectedly got see the premiere of Game of Thrones season three tonight! I'd signed up for a premiere party at a fancy hotel in downtown Chicago about a month ago and totally forgot about it, and I also wasn't expecting to get in because free events like these are usually pretty crazy and operate on a first come, first serve principle. I ( Read more... )

Nope I think that's it. I mostly missed Jaime/Brienne - I was hoping they'd be in the premiere :( I can't wait for the Queen of Thorns either! She isn't there yet, but I'm sure she'll be in the second episode.

The thing with Robb/Catelyn is that it's just such a dumb way to bring ~drama~ to their storyline when they don't need it at all! The best thing about them in the books is how much they love and respect each other. Ugh.

Yes, the Barristan stuff is different. Tbh, I wouldn't have remembered who he was at all had I not just re-watched the TV series. I watched the episode of his reveal literally the day before I read it in the book, that's the only reason I caught it. I always knew Greybeard would be someone we already knew, but idk - I feel like a lot of people won't remember him. Which is weird, because this episode plays it as if OF COURSE we all remember him. Which... nope.

Yeah the show is REALLY stressing how devoted Shae is to Sansa which brings a really interesting dynamic into it. I wasn't too upset about Shae betraying Tyrion in the book because her love for him never felt like anything more than sex and intrigue for her, but the show is really selling her as, like, the love of his life and a really loyal, good person. Which I love! It's one of the more interesting shifts from the book. I think out of everything going on with the show, I'm most interested to see how that plays out.

I agree with what you're saying about Arya. I certainly don't dislike her at all, but it has more to do with what you said at the end - people see her as a chick in dude clothes with a sword and that seems to be why they like her, not because she's this tortured child who has lost everything and has no sense of home or family left :\

I'm so excited about the Jaime/Brienne stuff this year too. I caved and watched their first scene from 3.02 that was released and loved it. And luckily you'll be able to watch more of their stuff somewhat soon when the screeners come!

Right, exactly. I can just see them playing it like Robb is annoyed with her most of the season, only to have them reconcile in the episode before the RW to make it more dramatic. sigh. I just feel like when they sat down to think about the s2/s3 Robb/Catelyn arc they were only thinking about how to make it through the necessary plot points rather than Catelyn's individual journey as a character. And you know, how to build up Robb. But I think there's probably a reason why Robb was never a POV character. There was a time when I wanted him to be (if only because he's the only Stark without one), but now I kind of appreciate the fact that his entire storyline was told from Cat's POV.

I feel like I should ask my co-workers (who only watch the show) if they remember Ser Barristan at all, haha. I feel like if you said to someone "remember the old knight that Joffrey threw out of court?" they might remember the scene, but exactly what he looked like? No way.
I think the show does this occasionally, like with Loras wearing Renly's armor at the Battle of the Blackwater (therefore freaking out Stannis' supporters who used to support Renly and causing confusion). To a show only person I think it looks like Loras is just someone who likes to take off his helmet in a dramatic fashion for no apparent reason, lol. I know Renly's crown/armor was more unique than most, but unless you're really into the show are you going to remember what it looked like?? I guess people just thought it was meant as a reminder that Littlefinger once had a conversation with the Tyrells about joining up with the Lannisters 4 episodes ago?

Oh! And did it seem like they might use Ros for Ser Dontos' role (helping Sansa with her escape) this season? I think that actually makes even more sense than in the books considering the fact that Ros already works for Littlefinger. Plus I'd be more interested in Ros/Sansa scenes than scenes with Sansa and a random drunken knight who never appears again after this storyline. I just read somewhere that that might be a thing.

Yeah, it's like, the RW is tragic enough, we don't need Robb ignoring Catelyn until that happens. That'd be even MORE upsetting. So much wasted happy times :(

Even when I watched the Barristan scene during my re-watch I didn't remember it from before. There are just so many characters to process so his scene barely registers.

Yeah the Loras in Renly's armor thing didn't make a lot of sense to me when I first watched it. I think they do take a lot of liberties when they expect you to remember things like that. It wasn't until I read the book and they mentioned ~Renly's ghost~ that I went back and watched the scene and caught that.

Oooh I like what you're saying about Ros as Dontos!!! That makes total sense. They didn't necessarily hint at that during the premiere, although Ros is always with Littlefinger now. There's a really good scene on a dock between Shae and Ros that I LOVE. I just love how protective everyone is of Sansa ♥
