Day 1 in Quetzaltenango
I have arrived in Guatemala. I got a ride from Sofia at 530am to the Boston airport, and arrived in Guatemala City at 100. I took a taxi to a bus station, and rode a ¨1st class¨ but that had a lot of commuters on it to Xela. It was a four hour ride, and I arrived around 7pm. estoy sorprendida que comiste tacos en la calle el primer dia!
quiero detalles de todo - recuerdo the bakery y pienso que hay muchas comidas vegan there, verdad?
hay un restaurante en que puedes desayunar al lado y arriba del parque central- balcon de don... no se el nombre, pero creo que hay un vendedor de boletos en el piso primero y esta cerca de la esquina noroeste del parque.
hay una tienda que tiene cosas organicas y hechas de grupos colectivos en guatemala. KUCHUB'AL. el hombre se llama MARIO. que bueno! tengo una botella de miel oscuro que parece molasses. el miel es de flores de plantas de cafe. los productos son muy buenos y verdaderos... ironically, it's right next to the big supermarket.
una cosa mas. si te gusta HIKING & exploring cloud forest/wee town/vertical farms and dirt roads/ magic volcanic lake at the bottom of the longest staircase you've ever seen at the top of a mountain, te recomiendo LAGUNA CHICABAL. vas en chicken bus a CHICABAL (ellos tienen que decirte donde la parada esta - pero busco san martin sacatepequez, creo) y ya .... un viaje de mitad del dia o mas en total. bring water and food!
(i'm recommending this, but my legs were sore for two days after)

as you can tell, i wish i was in guatemala right now.
THE LAST THING i'll say for now is that today bikes not bombs is actually loading a container of 500 bikes to be shipped to our partner MAYA PEDAL in san andres itzapa - www.mayapedal.org
it is outside of chimaltenango, which is outside of antigua. let me know if you're interested in visiting them, yeahhhhhh
i don't think you'll still be in guatemala by the time the shipment arrives, but wouldn't that be rad? ok best wishes ---- bye!

Thanks for the tips on Guate. Maybe I will be in Guate when the shipment arrives--I will be here until July 24.
Its funny that you mentioned coffee flower honey and Communidad Nueva Esperanza, because I actually supported a really similar finca-turned-community land project called La Florida. The folks there got kicked off of their finca, then decided to occupy another bankrupt finca until the government helped them to purchase it. They have similar ecotourism stuff going on, and also sell honey! El miel esta muy delicioso.
I hiked Vulcan Santa Maria today and I think I will be sore for two days now. haha.
