Hey everyone,
On Sunday morning Mark and I headed off to Izu Oshima, an island off of the coast of Izu Hanto. There we stayed at a crazy semi deserted ryokan that fed us tons of food. For dinner we had fried fish, two types of tempura fish, a tempura leaf, sashimi, and a clam and squid stew. whoaa. lots of fish. the next morning we had another fried fish. and we ate morning we had another fried fish. and we ate at a restaurant and they gave us a snail in our ramen, but we didn:t eat it because it looked way to crazy intense and apparently you need a hammer to break it open, but we didnt know that.
the island has a volcano that erupted in 198 island has a volcano that erupted in 1986, so mark paid a cab (high rolling in 1986, so mark paid a cab (high rolling, i know) to drive us up to the volcano so we could walk around for awhile. it was steaming. the entire island smelled a little like smoke.
after that we went to a hot spring (onsen) that is probably the most famous one on the island. there were ads of it all over the island with two pretty girls talking. the onsen had two tub rooms, one was super steamy and inside where you had to do the pre-onsen bath. the other was outside. it opened directly into the crater of the really old volcano, so you could basically see miles of tropical forest. there was a slight breeze, the water wasn:t too hot, and it was basically slight breeze, the water wasn:t too hot, and it was basically perfect.
today we walked around one of the towns in the island for awhile. at one point we seemed pretty hopelessly lost, but then two japanese ladies who owned a ryokan stopped by and gave us a ride back to the town. then we started walking again in the other direction, and we walked on the sidewalk along the highway that rode on the mountain along the coast. the view was really incredible; like big sur the view was really incredible; like big sur or something. the town was also pretty cool to walk around, it was really low key, possibly the people there were struggling a bit, but my general impression was taht people on the island just lived simply.
we took a boat back to tokyo that took over 4 hours. back to tokyo that took over 4 hours. we also weren:t assigned a seat. instead we got a piece of carpet adn a pillow where we were supposed to sleep. we were suprised by how cheap the ticket was, but i guess thats why.
tonight i:m staying in yokohama and mark has gone back to the base. i and mark has gone back to the base. i:m staying in a manga cafe, which is this place where you can rent private rooms (mine is for 1 you can rent private rooms (mine is for 10 hours) rent private rooms (mine is for 10 hours) where you can sleep, read comic books from their humongous comic book library, and zone out on the computer or tv for hours. tomorrow morning i take the bullet train to nara!
