Eragon Review

Dec 18, 2006 23:24

Got back from finally seeing Eragon, as a self-gift for finishing a commission (forgot to *scan*, but it was a portrait and boring and nomissingit).

Summary?
1. Formulaic
2. But, ooooh, pretty, pretty dragon.

Simply to get it out of my system, here's ( more ranting and raving )

diary, review

Kicked down the rant. I wish LJ's commentthreads had a fucking edit function (like the entries themselves do). I'll just pretend I didn't see this nor say that. But the damage has been done already. On both fronts, no doubt. Meh.

Hmmm... from what everyone's said I probably won't see Eragon, unless I happen to see it on a Tuesday, when the local theater charges only 5 bucks.

I've still got mixed feelings about His Dark Materials. I absolutely loved the books, but the more I find out about Phillip Pullman the more of a jealous ass he seems. Right after the first Narnia movie came out he went on this crazed "C.S. Lewis is evil and his books are Christian propaganda" tirade. Uhuh, sure he's not jealous...

Nevermind that the name Aslan was specifically taken from Islamic tradition, nevermind that it had good satyrs, nevermind that at the freakin' end of the series Aslan is all like "Uh, yeah, you know what? Worship demons for all I care, just be nice k?"

It just...gah... makes me so mad when my favorite books and art turn out to be made by assholes.

Woohoo this journal entry is gonna be full of rants! :D

Eh, I'll see the golden compass movie anyways, and hope that it's done well. I love armored bears!

Hehehe, I can see what you mean. But I like Pullman. What you find as asshole-ness I find as charming not-taking-shit-from-religion-yay. I doubt he's jealous as much as activist-y. I never read Narnia, which I totally think is a shame that I'm past the point of being able to digest it without being barfy. I never read them in fifth grade when the teacher recommended them, shit D:

Oh man, the Narnia books were awesome, last ones were the best, where stuff went insane and unicorns were goring goblins with their horns, hehehe.

I never really minded Pullman's stance on religion, he always seemed smart enough not to get too preachy in the books, which is good. I guess at the end his stance is obvious, but we gotta write the things that make us passionate I suppose.

I dunno though, around when Narnia came out Pullman (joined by J.K Rowling) appeared to attack rather nonsensical things about the Narnia series which seemed like jealousy to me, because I would've figured such a literary genius could do better. At the time though, the dark materials films were having trouble and several religious groups seemed to take the opportunity to go "nyah, nyah." So maybe that's why he was ranted back, though he attacked the wrong thing in my opinion.

I hatehatehate it when people take awesome things and start using them to further their own agendas though. Just gimme my disgruntled unicorns and meteorite armored bears.

:D I can't wait to get more on that Golden Compass movie. The thought makes me wriggle. X3 I loved those books.

I've heard all kinds of bad things about Eragon from people who've read the book, but luckily I've not and I'm only going because of the pretty dragons, so hopefully that'll cut it! XD

Thanks for the link sharing!

Yeah, the pretty dragons are worth it, and it's pretty fun besides. Just don't go expecting a masterpiece, but for all intense and purposes go! 's fun!

Ooooh, I want to find that list,Dunno if it's really *worth* it anymore but the damage has been done, might as well. Ahah.

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one feeling uncomfortable in this kid selling a fluke-famous book because he self-promoted it. There's nothing to stop him, and the world is by nature unfair, but ack. Ack. Ackackack.

Iorek F'sure. And I forgot about the mulefa. Z'omg!

Oh man, I can totally see them now. "H'omg it's like the same! You'll automatically like it!" Ack! That's not fun.
And you're right. Most movies are made by normal working people on not-to-amazing scripts. Not there fault, and they did a spectacular job with what they had. I'm dying to see concept art for the creatures and whatnot, to see what other designs they came up with. But there's only so much they can do.

It never made sense to me, the bonding thing. According to Shurtugal, dragons have the same status as humans. So, whoa, slavery.

But hey, the illustrator of the books, John Jude Palencar, is fabulous. My calendar of his works is beautiful.
