This morning I dreamt of these things. Unseen aliens had taken control of humanity, not changing our daily lives but demanding absolute control. They used these things- I'm calling them P.E.E.R.s- to keep unrest in check.
Any human who was disloyal to the alien occupation [entered into a database somewhere] would be destroyed instantly on sight by the P.E.E.R.s energy beam. If they were certain of your identity, it would take a fraction of a second of coming within range of a P.E.E.R.'s camera to be killed. So, if you were like me and not bent under the alien's will, going into any place with the even the slightest possibility of a P.E.E.R. being nearby was petrifying. The only thing you could do was make the P.E.E.R. doubt your disloyalty [someone could argue your case with them] giving you a few seconds as it processed the conflicting data.
Therefore In my dream I was deathly afraid of windows. And sometimes the P.E.E.R. would come to a house, burn a tiny hole through a wall, and look around inside, so even indoors isn't safe! So I needed two layers of protection- I ended up hiding under my bed, surrounded by comforters, absolutely horrified.
P.E.E.R.s come in sizes from as small as a house cat [and probably smaller] to as large as skyscrapers- all vivid pink and exactly the same except for like, thicker legs on the bigger ones.
There is no protection from their beams. You can only harm a P.E.E.R. by striking it with multiple weapons simultaneously- any incoming threat will be blasted, and you can only hope to occupy its beam for long enough to sneak something else past its defense. So like, the military planned to attack the massive P.E.E.R.s by surrounding them with aircraft all shooting at one at the same time. Thing is, it's certain that ONE of the jets will be vapourized in the maneuver- it's a roulette as to which one. A terrifying mission for the pilots :{
So, these new spirits of paranoia are begrudgingly added to my pantheon of species.
