Birthday dinner at Coffee Club

Apr 28, 2007 00:47

We couldn't decide where to go for dinner. After the husband's numerous suggestions, we ended up going to Coffee Club at Ngee Ann City. And regretting it. Except for the desert, which was delicious.

After a lag time of more than one year, the return to eat at Coffee Club was really a shocker. The garlic prawn pasta, which is by the way a chef's recommendation, had become a little too oily and soggy. Also the amount of prawns had decreased drastically and so had the amount of onions, tomatoes and chilli oil taste. Presentation wise was also lack lustre. The beef daube, which is a new item on the menu, looked as though it had been taken from some canned food. The beef was pretty black, as though it were over-cooked, although it was still tender, which made me suspect that they used canned meat. Also, the mashed potato that was served with it looked as though it was one of those instant ones which you can purchase from the supermarket. The potato looked dry and the butter taste was also lacking.

The potato wedges however had a little twist in their serving that did make them taste nicer. Instead of being served with mayonnaise and salsa, it was served with sour cream and salsa instead. Very unique.

The lychee panna cotta is the desert to die for. Panna cotta has always been my favourite ever since holidaying at Banyan Tree Bintan last year, but the addition of lychee in this one was really something different. Instead of the all vanilla taste, the extra tinge of lychee bits added a divine sweetness that was both refreshing and contrasting. And it helped that the panna cotta was served with strawberry ice cream and strawberry sauce, instead of the usual raspberry puree. Really an eye opener as to how such a small change can make a major impact to the taste of an already terrific desert.
