A/N:

Summary: Showing weakness was not an option, but he didn't have a choice this time.

He wonders just how cliché things can get before it starts to rain. A wry smile twists his lips as he looks up towards the sky. Cloudscloudsclouds... far as he can see.

Kakashi Hatake returns his gaze to the large stone, carved with names of so many, so many lost in battle, so many comeradesfriendslovedones.

He sets a single wildflower at the foot of the stone and straightens again, murmuring quiet prayers to a god he doesn't quite believe in. Why should he, when this so-called god had taken everyone he's ever held dear? How could it be so unfair? Whywhywhywhywh-

"Kakashi-sensei?"

He starts, cursing to himself. A lapse in attention like that would have cost him his life in battle.

"Naruto."

The young fox trots closer, nose twitching in the sensitive weather. The rain doesn't abate, only continues its relentless pounding of the earth. Kakashi turns back towards the grave stone. His eyes trace every contour and curve of those familiar names that had once rested on very real lips, lips that were full and red and ripe with life. And now, those lips, those very same lips were cold, and colourless, and whispered poison into his ears, injecting acids into his veins.

Black-widow fingers creep up through the earth and grab his ankles, shackling him to the spot. They crawl up his legs, slowly, slowly, slow. They wrap around his arm, his waist, his chest, reaching for his neck and pulsing veins. He gulps thickly and tries to keep his breathing calm. He can't let his student see him like this. He can't\can't\won't.

Distant voices, thunder voices, echoing through the years, calling his name, his name\Kakashi\Kakashi\Hatake\Hatake\CopyCat\kitty\kittykitty. His fingers curl into painful balls. The spiders scuttle up his neck and weave webs around his mouth, his nose, cutting off his air. He gasps and chokes, eyes watering, but he holds them in. Naruto is here. His student is watching. He can't show weakness. He can'twon'tcan't.

"You can cry you know." Kakashi glances at his most exuberant student. Not something you'd expect the Uzumaki Naruto to say. But his face is set, lip-corners weighed down with unspoken burdens. It's only now that Kakashi realizes the hell this boy's been through. It's a pain that he himself, would never understand. At this, the air flows back into his lungs and the spiders melt away, spindle-spun fingers retreat back into the earth and the ice-cold lips that kiss snowflakes to his cheeks are only raindrops on his skin.

"It's raining, so I wouldn't be able to tell anyways." Naruto's voice is gruff, but laced with ill-hidden worries for his sensei. He squints up at the older shinobi, not a hint of his usual playfulness in sight.

It is then that Kakashi realizes the rain on his cheeks tastes salty on his lips.
